San diego highlights we should not miss

We are a family of four heading out to San Diego,CA for April Vacation, this is our first trip to this area. Kids are 7 yr old girl and 11 yr old boy. Any interesting sites besides the zoo that we should not miss?

San Diego has beautiful beaches, obviously - plan to spend time on them. Hotel del Coronado on Coronado "Island" is a beautiful, historic structure worth a look - also on a pretty beach. If you really want "sites" there is an old Spanish mission or two near San Diego - check the guidebooks. But San Diego is more about fun and sun - and the well-known tourist stuff like Sea World and the Zoo - than about great "sites".

Balboa Park - where zoo is located - is pretty nice though.

Andrew
I have always liked the Harbor Cruise. They have short rides, longer rides, and a Sunday brunch type thing. Also Pt. Loma is a nice ride, out to the lighthouse for a total breathtaking view of San Diego. The kids would like the cove at La Jolla. Sea loins may be there at that time on the beach. Visit Old Town for some Mexican Food. Seaport Village, just shops, and mainly walking around. A walk on the beach will be nice, but still chilly for swimming in April. Ditto Coronado Island. A must see. Have fun and enjoy.

Torrey Pines State Reserve has some of the best coastal scenery in the world, pleasant hiking trails on bluffs above the ocean.

sea world is expensive but really good if you've never seen that type of thing. if you like boat rides, go whale watching...even if you don't see a whale, the boat ride is nice. we saw lots of dolphins. rent boogie boards at pacific or mission beach. my visiting kids all went in the water in april.

jomama - just bought the book "Unofficial Guide to California with Kids". There is a section devoted to San Diego. Many of the suggestions in the book have been listed here but also includes the Wild Animal park that is run by the San Diego Zoo but it about 45 minutes north of the city. Also includes restaurant suggestions. You might want to check it out.
