San Diego Help!

We are planning a trip to San Diego in August. Can anyone recommend the best area to stay in. How is the Gas Lamp Area? We would prefer not to rent a car but would like to get to the zoo. Any suggestions would be appreciated. BTW, we can rent a car but our son will be visiting for a day or so from LA and he has a car.

I think the best area to stay in depends on what you want to do. The Gaslamp area is right downtown with a lot of restaurants, bars, and clubs close by. Very convinient to the trolly system. Without a car, this area or at least in downtown is probably where I would stay.

If you want to be on the beach though, being without a car will be harder because things are more spread out and public transportation isn't as good.

It just depends on what type of environment you want.

The Hotel Del Coronado is great, but for sightseeing without a car, it is not the most convinient location. It would probably be my choice if I had a car and the budget for a room there though.

I like the gaslamp area, lots of enjoyable walking and good restaurants. Check out the US Grant Hotel there, just lovely, and some good rates on expedia.

frankie is spot on about the US Grant Hotel...stayed there last month and it was wonderful..Expedia has rates as low as $199 a night..can't beat that and you can walk to everything.
