San Diego GasLamp Restaurants

Can anyone recommend good restaurants for a young couple in the GasLamp? Interested in good Mexican, Spanish, American Bistro, etc. Not interested in chains. Also, what are the best bars for drinks?

The Gaslamp is a great place for young couples! I haven't tried all the restaurants there as there seems to be lots of turnover, but I like Dakota's for American bistro-style food. If I remember correctly there's a popular bar below the restaurant. The Gaslamp isn't the best place for Mexican--do Old Town (Casa de Bandini is my favorite), which is also a fun place after dark. There is a plethora of upscale Italian restaurants in the Gaslamp though--all the one's I've tried over the years have been great. The two that I specifically remember as being exceptional are Mama Ana's and Fio's, although it's been a couple of years. Don't know what kind of bar atmosphere you like, but there's a classy jazz bar/restaurant called Croce's that's been around for a long time.

Here's a website that lists descriptions of all the restaurants in the Gaslamp:

Hard to go wrong.

The best bar is "The Bitter End". Great martinis!

If you enjoy breweries, Karl Strauss has a good brewery restaurant downtown. It's not right in the Gaslamp Dist, but it's close. The beer was very good and the food was terrific.

Candelas is an excellent Mexican restaurant in the Gaslamp district. It is quiet, small, attractive, romantic and serves excellent food with great service. It is not traditional Mexican. The location at 416 5th Ave. is not right in the middle of things but isn't far off. I learned about it from Citysearch before I went out there for business, and I was not disappointed. I had the Langosta Baeza, which is a lobster shell stuffed with jalapenos, bacon and other things, along with lobster of course. Entrees at dinner run around $20-$35.

Fio's is great. We had a table on the sidewalk. It was great. Prom night so we should have had reservations but we were seated pretty quickly. Food was terrific as was the service. Croce's is right across the street for music. Seemed like while we were eating we noticed lots of activity going on at the corner of the 800 block of 5th.

I don't know what's going to be there, probably some new Cohn restaurant. There was quite a bit of coverage on KFMB when it closed. I liked it too, so it's disappointing.

Uh oh, really? I see their Web site says they are on the move but I didn't know what that meant. They've been there awhile. That's too bad.
