San Diego Gaslamp Hotels- Urgent
Thre couples decided last minute weekend trip to San Diego. I mean this Saturday and Sunday. Since we are staying just one night, want a centrally located, near to restaurants and Balboa park. Would like to 3 to 4 stars. Have seen around $200.00 in several sites, but not sure yet. I checked on Westin, on Indigo, Embassy Suites. Sheraton Suites is not an option, due to the hill. Please suggetions would be much appreciated.

Gas Lamp is not "close" to Balboa Park.
That said, we like Omni and the Marriott Courtyard in Gas Lamp. The US Grant is also nice and the W. Not sure what cost is on these at last minute. I would suggest calling the hotels direct, and see what deals can be had. DO NOT use the toll free 800 # as you won't get the best price, even online won't be as good as calling direct to hotel.

We enjoyed the Indigo, mainly because they are extremely pet friendly. Still, it's a trendy boutique hotel, nice 9th floor bar/deck to hang out with a view of the city and Petco park. They are few blocks right outside of Gaslamp-just so you know. We booked through their site and paid a lot more than others, so I would look at ALL booking methods for the cheapest rate. With a car, Balboa Park is a hop, skip and jump away. Have fun!

Thank you all, but we have decided to stay in Del Mar, and get trolley just out of the town. I guess we all need quieter ambience. We just booked at Homestead Del Mar, #3 on the favorite list for hotels at www.tripadvisor.com. We are all in our early 50's.

The Gaslamp is near Balboa Park, near enough to walk if you want.
Homestead Del Mar is not in Del Mar, it is in San Diego. It is, however, just across the I-5 from Del Mar, but you will not be walking to anywhere in Del Mar, or any beach. You'll have to drive to everything. I think this is a good location, but it isn't at all what you said you were looking for.
I'm not sure what "trolley" you mean.

near enough to walk - ?? Really?
I walk a lot [several miles a day] and I can't imagine walking from let's say Petco Park area to Japanese Friendship Garden or Timken Museum or the Zoo and then be able to walk all over the park and or zoo.

Homewood suites in Carmel Valley/Del Mar would be great but not close to Balboa Park but do the Torrey Pines State reserve next to the Torrey Pines Golf Course.
Excellent oceanfront hike.
There is no trolley, there is a coaster connection in Sorrento Valley.
Have lunch at the Prado in Balboa Park.
Del Mar/Rancho Santa Fe is my hood and there are lots of great price point restaurants.
The burger at the golf course is really good.
Have lunch at George's at the cove on the ocean terrace in La Jolla.

The Ivy is a nice hotel downtown.

If it were me I would stay at Park Manor Suites adjacent to Balboa Park. They have large suites with kitchens, including 2 bedroom units.

staying at the hilton bayside (by the water across from petco park). DH walked from here to Balboa Park today in 45 min. it is very doable. May take you longer if you ar enot used to walking a lot...and yes, he walked all over the park after that.
