San Diego for family vacation?

Is San Diego a good family vacation spot (kids 13 and 15)? if so where? is mid-late august a good time. we're used to outer banks NC beaches so a slow, resort-type location would be of preference. Thanks.

San diego is a great place for a family vacation, but like most places in Southern California,I don't think it would be described as "slow".
August will be hot and dry, and the water at the beaches should be warm. for your age kids, I would recommend Coronado, Mission Beach, or La Jolla. Coronado is very laid back and a good place to rent bikes, play on the beach, or wander around town. It is also very convenient to Zoo, Balboa Park, Gas lamp district and others. Mission beach is a long crowded strip of a beach town, but loads of fun. There is a nice boardwalk (a wide sidewalk actually) on the ocean side, bike trails on the bay side, a great old roller coaster, lots of funky shopping, and again, it is very easy to get to downtown, Seaworld, etc. La Jolla is very upscale, with lots of boutiques, restaraunts, sushi bars, and art galleries. It is hard to park and takes quite a bit longer to get downtown due to the surface streets and more traffic.

If you want a slower pace, then stay in Carlsbad or one of the other north county cities. You are only 45 min to any attraction in SD, but you don't have crowds. Mid august is a good time as the water is usually warmer (never gets very warm - 72 max)
