San Diego for 5 days

hi all... my husband and I are planning to go to San Diego in April for 5 Days. We are planning to see the Padres play. Can I get some suggestions for a moderate price hotel (under 250). Since we will have a car can you tell me about parking? What do you suggest as must see..... little Italy, Gas light, Lajolla, zoo etc. thanks so much.

My "go to" hotel in San Diego is the Best Western Plus Island Palms. It is in the area called Shelter Island/Point Loma area. Not in the downtown or Mission Bay areas. It is on the marina which has a great walking path. There is plenty of free parking here for the guests. Do try Point Loma Seafoods.

Some of the things I've enjoyed in San Diego are a tour of the air craft carrier Midway; the zoo; and Balboa Park. One of my favorite restaurants is Old Town Mexican Cafe~I love their carnitas!

No idea what your preferences are, but there’s a fair bit of info on San Diego attractions and food on my trip reports.

The Point Loma area (Shelter Island specifically) is a great location. It is close to downtown and has decent freeway access. It is on the bay with views of downtown and Coronado. As mentiined above Pt.Loma Seafood is a fun place with fresh sea food. The fish is unloaded on the docks just feet from the restaurant.

Check out the Little Italy area west of Broadway downtown's main street. There are so many restaurants just stroll along and you will find so many fun places to chose from.

Also close to the hotel on Shelter Island (Island Palms mentioned above) is Liberty Station. Check out Stone Brewery and Restaurant.

We spent several hours touring the Midway . Near there, we enjoyed a harbor tour by boat.
I think it took us 2 full days to visit all the museums in Balboa Park. Didn't go to the zoo.

We stayed at the Hotel Indigo, not sure of their prices since we stayed on points; it's close enough to walk to the Padres' stadium and has great views of the stadium plus a fun little roof top bar.

We loved going to the zoo, the Midway, and Balboa Park. Our favorite is La Jolla - go to the Children's Pool to see the seals/sea lions and go to the Cove. Tons of good restaurants like Cody's, Brockton Villa, and George's at the Cove. You can also go to Coronado; the Hotel Del is fun to see. We stayed there too, but it's pricey. Beautiful beach.

I have heard very good things about Hotel Indigo as well.
I can recommend these following restaurants in La Jolla:

1. Old fashioned American diner Break/Lunch Harry's Coffee Shop on Girard (the main street)
2. Sugar & Scribe break/lunch on Fay Ave one blk west of Girard.
3. Bistro du Marche French Lunch/Dinner also on Girard.
4. El Pescador on Pearl lunch/dinner.

In La Jolla Shores:
1. Piatti's Italian Brunch/Lunch/Dinner

San Diego best place to visit in California.

Regarding parking, we've found parking at some of the hotels to be very expensive, so we park in a nearby parking garage. $50 a night vs. $15.
