San Diego Coaster train

How do I get to the Coaster San Diego station from the Gaslamp district w/o a car? Trolley? Thank you.

Isn't that the Santa Fe Station?
You could just about walk or take a cab I think.

The Coaster departs from San Diego union Station the smae depot used by AMTRAK. It's a fairly easy walk from the GasLamp but, if you're also toting luggage, a taxi might be easier.

I presume, since you specifically asked about The Coaster you know it is a commuter train and, except during commute times, has a very limited schedule and goes only as far as Oceanside. If you are going futher or need a more extensive schedule, AMTRAK should fit the bill.

Thank you for your replies.

We're staying at the Marriott Gaslamp over Presidents' Day long weekend (w/o a car).

On Saturday, I thought we would take the Coaster to Encinitas and check out the beach, stores, cafes. Good idea? No?

Thank you.

You need to check schedules. I'm not sure if The Coaster operates on weekends and, if so, where the stops are. If not, AMTRAK can be taken to either Solana Beach or Oceanside but not to Encinitas. From either stop, it is only a short walk to the beach from the train station.

An alternative would be to take AMTRAK to San Juan Capistrano and visit the Mission SJC for an hour or two. It is just across the street from the station. Then, you could make another stop in either Oceanside or Solana Beach on the way back to San Diego. AMTRAK runs frequently enough so that would be practicle and, if you have never visited a California Mission, it is worth doing.

You could take the Trolley, which stops right at the Santa Fe Depot, or a cab.

If you use Amtrak, Solana Beach has lots of interesting little shops and San Juan Capistrano is a great idea.

Caribcarol:

If it is still timely, you might want to check out this URL for the Coaster schedule:

http://www.gonctd.com/coaster_schedules.htm

There are 4 trains a day in each direction on Saturday, and only the first two out of SD (11:15 and 2:10) would seem to be useful for your trip to Encinitas (which is a lovely beach community with easy walking from the Coaster station).
