San Diego - cheap accomodation
Can anyone recommend central or beachside any non hostel accomodation for a couple with baby?
|
San Diego is not a very cheap place to visit especially by the beach. Some central and budget locations are the Mission Valley and Old Town Areas where there are a number of chain hotels to choose from. You can go to www.uniontrib.com and look under lodgings for a variety of hotels and prices.

You might try Town and Country Resort. It is close to the trolley and sometimes you can get a $99.00 rate.It is old style with Palm Trees and large enough to offer many types of rooms. The beach is about 20 minutes away.

I recently stayed at a Best Western Seven Seas Lodge on Pacific Beach(I think) which is maybe a mile from Mission Beach. I got an internet rate through hoteldiscounts. com of I believe $105.00 plus tax per night for an ocean view room. They have many hotels to choose from, though. Give 'em a try! Have fun!

I am booked in to "La Pensione" on the corner of Date and India Streets downtown (Little Italy). We are paying $70 for 3 in a room. They have a website: www.lapensionehotel.com
The place is pretty new and fresh looking. It has won best budget hotel by Fodors and Frommers, so should be OK.
Kate

Just for your information, Little Italy is very close to the airport and almost directly under the airplane pattern. The planes will be very low and the noise could be very loud. My guess is that the price of the room reflects the location.

The previous poster is correct about the proximity to the airport. However, Little Italy is on the approach in prevailing wind conditions (almost all the time) so aircraft are landing, with engines on a "flight idle" setting. So while there may be some additional noise I don't think it is anything like if you were on the takeoff side. I have spent a fair amount of time around Little Italy, including eating outside and never really noticed the noise at all.

Two years ago we stayed at La Avenida on the main street on Coronado --not far from the Hotel del Coronado. It was about $100 a night --not luxurious, but nice enough; had a pool; about a two-block walk to the ocean. There are a lot of shops along that main street --bookstore, coffee shop, bagel shop, ice cream shop, etc. It's a nice area. But best of all is the Mexican restaruant that's just a few doors over from La Avenida, called Miguel's Cosina. I highly recommend it!
