San Diego - Balboa Park museums - Free Admission?? per Fodors

According to Fodor's Destination info on here:
"The best deal is the Free Tuesdays in the Park, a rotating schedule of free admission to most all of Balboa Park's museums."

It then goes on to tell which museums are free on which days. We will be in San Diego on the 3rd Tuesday in May, which would mean that these would be free --

San Diego Art Institute
San Diego Museum of Art
San Diego Museum of Man
Japanese Friendship Garden
Mingei International Museum

Sounds great but when I look at the websites for these museums, not one of them mentions free admission.

Anyone know if this information is up-to-date/accurate?

Thanks,
Deb

Deb, I remember we were there on one of those free Tuesdays, and I checked on of them, in faq section:

http://www.sdmart.org/info-faq.html#free

Are there any days when the Museum is free?

There is free admission to the permanent collection on the third Tuesday of each month. Balboa Park has a selection of museums that offer free admission every first through fourth Tuesdays of the month. Click here for a schedule of Free Tuesdays.

Clicked on "click here"

http://www.balboapark.org/index.php#Tusdays

This did not give any more info on free Tuesdays (not my typo in this URL it IS "tusdays" )

Check each website.

Faina,
Thanks for the links.

I looked at http://www.balboapark.org/index.php#Tusdays earlier before I posted and could not find anything on the free days.

http://www.sdmart.org/info-faq.html#free does indicated that there are free Tuesdays, but can't get past that point.

YOu know me, always looking for a deal!

"The Mingei is always free."

Not sure where you got that, mlgb --

http://www.mingei.org/visit/san-diego.php There is admission charged to get into Mingei unless you are a member or on the 3rd Tuesday of month, per above info.

Note on Free Museum Days. From past exeperience it is the day when all the schools seem to take the day to go on a field trip. Free admission - who could blame them. They also seem to do bag lunches all over the park. In teh summer all the day camps seem to do the same.

I would add Natural History Museum to your list. Science museum too if you have kids. My fav is the museum of Man. All the museums have great gift shops as well. You can get into these without admission anyday.

If you are going to spend the day museum hopping, take a picnic lunch to enjoy, the park is beautiful and you should be able to find somewhere out of the crowds. Or book a table outside at the Prado Restaurant.

I am just rechecking everything for our trip tomorrow. Going back to the links above, I now see that the FREE days are for San Diego residents, military only.

Oh well, nice try.

Fodors needs to update its info. It is in print too.

Do go visit the Timken. It's got some gems there, including a rare painting by Pieter Bruegel the Elder.
