San Diego Area for Snowbirds
We are thinking of spending a month in the San Diego area during March and April but don't really know which area would be good for us. We love the ocean, and want to be close, if not on the beach, then a short walk to the ocean. we also like to be in an area where there would be lots to do, as in shopping, sightseeing, activities. Would anyone be able to recommend an area that would fit our wishes? Thank you

My favorite area is Carlsbad- cute little downtown area with shops, restaurants. Nice beaches for walking, swimming. Great outlet mall for shopping.
Also, there is an Amtrak station so you can take train into SD or other coastal towns. I used to take train to get to the airport too- very easy and inexpensive. Just take train into SD, transfer to bus and go straight to airport.

from what you've said...i'd have a look at vrbo.com for places on Coronado. there is the beach area in front of the hotel del...drive further south on "the strand" and you can find some empty areas to walk along...have seen dolphins there a few times. there is the ferry from Coronado to downtown so while there are plenty of restaurants on Coronado...quick ferry ride ad you can be in downtown san diego. for me, i'd book a place on Coronado for 2 weeks and then go explore inland for 5-7 days...maybe palm springs, vegas (if that interests you) and then return to the coast for the end of your trip. san diego if you love it or look at laguna beach, Carlsbad. however, if you want to just stay put, you could probably get a good rate if you booked a place for a month and with those savings, you could still go explore palm springs, death valley or vegas for 3 nights. another place in san diego you could look at is capri by the sea...great view...pool is down the block...more "low key" area then coronado. wherever you pick, make sure you have parking included.

Carlsbad is a great place - I've vacationed there every year since 1960.

bigtyke- thanks for that rental link. Spent last Christmas in Carlsbad at the Four Seasons but doubt that opportunity will come again so am happy to find a rental company-
My daughter used to live there- loved being able to visit her there.
