San Diego

Looking for a fantastic place to stay in San Diego or the area. I have the Del is fantastic but the Marriott on Coronado has gone down hill. I am looking to be close to water. also, any thoughts on the four seasons or La Costa in Carlsbad?

We loved staying at the Del. Don't know anything about the Marriott. Coronado is such a great place to stroll around.

LaJolla is also very nice although I have never stayed in a hotel there.
Yes - they are very far away. It depends on what you're doing in SD. If you just want to stay at a luxe resort and aren't into being close to anything, these would be fine. Same type of place, a little closer in is the new Lodge at Torrey Pines. I have not heard any of the bad things re Marroitt in Coronado going downhill - it is a favorite of many people I know that want a newer place to stay than the Del. The pool area is great, nice rooms - a bit far from the center of town and the beach isn't really one I'd swim in but still a nice property.

i think la costa is inland a ways. check into la jolla places. it's classy but close enough to stroll along the coast. or try del mar.

I don't care for the Del...too touristy for me. You don't say whether you're a couple, family, individual?? If you're a couple, try La Valencia in La Jolla for a great place. If you want to be close to the water, skip La Costa and the Four Seasons. If you're a family, try the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club.

Thanks for your help. We are a couple. How about the Lodge at Torrey Pines -- any thoughts?

The Lodge at Torrey Pines is beautiful...with spectacular ocean views. But it's high up on a cliff. If you want to put your toes in the water, stay down in the village of La Jolla or at La Jolla Shores. Try La Valencia or the Grande Colonial to be close enough to put your toes in, great views, super village walking, incredible restaurants very nearby.
Also look at L'Auberge Del Mar, in Del Mar. It's very close to the beach, although not right on the beach. There are a number of good restaurants within walking distance, and some shopping. You might also consider La Valencia Resort. It is lovely, but a little inland.

Sorry, it's actually Rancho Valencia Resort.

If you're not looking to spend a ton of money, you might look into the Hotel La Jolla. It's between 130-170/night and you can walk to the La Jolla beaches. Every room above the 4th floor has a view of the ocean. Shuttle bus into the cove area...
