Two seniors looking to escape Northeast winter. Would San Diego in March be a good option? Have never been there. Looking for suggestions where to begin. Just two of us. Outdoors oriented - hiking, biking, beach. Is it insanely expensive there?

It's supposed to have the best climate in the US. Average daytime highs in the mid 60s F with half of the days being sunny. On average 5 days of rain. Long-term rentals can be as low as $2,000/month. Plenty of outdoor recreational opportunities.

The weather is terrific in February and March. Super mild.

My recommendation, for everyone, but especially seniors, is to go in February. In February, seniors get complimentary (vs. $70 pp) to San Diego Safari Park (in northern San Diego county). It is fabulous! Also, February is Museum month, so half price to over 70 museums. My favorite was the Air & Space museum, one of many museums in Balboa Park.

Any month in San Diego is a good month. As a native you can’t go wrong with a visit to our fair city. Surfer girl had a great suggestion with the freebies in February. You could choose to stay in the North Park area or the beach towns. Or you could venture up to Oceanside which has expanded its vacation draw and is just a train ride south to San Diego or north to Orange County, Los Angeles, or even Santa Barbara. You could even try a couple of locations. Lots of opportunities.

I’ve been to San Diego in March and it’s a fantastic escape from the cold. Temperatures are usually in the 60s–70s, making them great for hiking Torrey Pines or Cowles Mountain, biking along Mission Bay, and spending time at La Jolla Shores or Coronado Beach. It’s true some areas can be pricey, but if you stay a little inland, it’s much more reasonable. The best part is that most of the outdoor fun trails, beaches, and coastal walks don’t cost a thing.

We're looking to go back to Carlsbad for two months over the winter months. It's within driving distance to San Diego but a bid quieter but not sleepy. The weather was terrific for this Chicago resident.

Several years ago my husband and I spent a week at the Del in early February and it was great. Too cool to swim outside but very pleasant to walk around and sit out. It had been a rainy season just prior and part of Balboa Park was closed off as well as trail in La Jolla, adjacent to the golf course. We really enjoy Coranado as you can walk to restaurants and shops and easy access to San Diego by car or by ferry, which we did several times.

Sure southern California has good weather. As to cost just depends what you choose.

No one place is likely "insanely expensive" ... depnds on where you stay and what you do. Where you eat. Etc.

I saw your tag also mentions Florida? I'd say the same. Just tune into towns/cities that interest you and look up rental options.

Will you rent a car? How long will you stay? What airport(s) will you fly in and out of?
