San Antonio, Texas

Does anybody have any suggestions on what to do in San Antonio, in addition to the River Walk - Alamo - Six Flags - Sea World?
Any suggestions on where to stay for a family of 4 (2 adults & 2 children under 10)? We will be renting a car. What is the weather
like there in Mid-July -- I imagine hot? Thanks for any help.

My family and I went to San Antonio in March and enjoyed all the sights you mentioned. In addition to those, my children enjoyed Natural Bridge Caverns- toward New Braunfels. We also found the missions to be interesting and free. You will find a well-marked mission trail. Yes, be prepared for the heat--- and rain.

Your lodging choices can run the gamut from staying on the Riverwalk: La Mansion, Hyatt, and Marriott RiverCenter are some I have stayed at and they were all very nice and costly except for La Mansion which cost $99.00/night and they had Nintendo in the very spacious rooms-I liked that hotel the best. There are also many other Hotels in the area. Embassy Suites are a good option coz you can get breakfasts and happy hour and the rooms have fridges, etc. We stayed at one that was far away from everything out by the airport but it's a reliable chain if you need a suite.

Message: My husband and I were in San Antonio in April. We stayed at the Historic Menger Hotel which is walking distance to the Alamo and Riverwalk. We loved this beautiful hotel! We saved $100.00 by mentioning a special found on the internet. I believe I found their website through Yahoo under lodgings by city. Have a great trip!

Aside from all the wonderful tourist attractions you mentioned, San Antonio also has numerous parks and lakes you might want to visit. For a complete rundown, visit:

To answer your other question, the average high temperature in July is 94.4 degrees Fahrenheit and the average low temperature is 73.6 degrees Fahrenheit. Expect high humidity (near or exceeding 50%25) and the potential for 100 degree days.

I stayed a week in San Antonio in August 95. It was hot and humid but we enjoyed it very much. We stayed in a B&B in the King William district just south of downtown. This is an area originally settled by German merchants and businessmen and their families in the mid 1800's. We had a suite in a carriage house that included a bedroom, full bath, living room with pull-out coach and dining area. The owners stocked the frig with all the fixings for breakfast, coffee, fruit, milk, juices, cereal, muffins, etc. The place also had a small swimming pool and down the street was the former mansion of the owner of a flour mill that also served breakfast and lunch. The suite cost $100. per night.
Check with the San Antonio Tourist Office for a list of B&B's and Inns in the city. Have fun.

MiTierra in Market Square (take a tolley there for 50 cemts) has great Mexican food but don’t miss the frozen margherita -- the very best we've ever had (and we try them everywhere we go). Also for fine dining (Continental), there's Carnevores in Hotel La Mansion on Riverwalk. It's an elegant, romantic room with piano music, dim lights. Pretty dressy - men must wear jackets; but not overly expensive.

I live in San Antonio. For Mexican restaurants try: Rio Rio (on the river). I agree with Mi Tierra and its sister La Margarita (also downtown). If you want to venture north of town try: Tomatillos, La Fogata, Taco Flats or Dos Amigos. Also, unless they changed the name of the restaurant Patti recommended at La Mansion, it's Las Canarias. And La Mansion is a very charming place to stay. YOu will feel much more as though you've been in San Antonio than if you stayed at one of the big chain hotels. My husband took us for Mother's Day weekend and it was wonderful.
