San Antonio Riverwalk in December

Flying in to Austin 12/9 and heading to San Antonio Riverwalk. Husband and I will be staying until 12/13. Should we rent a car in Austin? Will we need one once we are in San Antonio or is everything within walking distance? Can you please recommend things to do, places to go and of course good restaurants? Have never been to Texas and excited to see the Riverwalk at Christmas! Thanks for your time helping to plan our itinerary! ❤️

We did a day trip from San Antonio and went to Fredericksburg. The hill town was fun to walk through, shopping and a great lunch filled the day. Walking the river walk was nice. We ate at the Fig Tree restaurant and had a great meal. We explored the Alamo and wandered through the town exploring areas/shopping. We did go to the Historic Market Square and had lunch. We only used the car to the airport and Fredericksburg. Have fun.

You won't need a car if you are only staying in the old / downtown / riverwalk area of S.A, but as pagngo mentions a trip through the Texas hill country can be a nice side trip. It's not wildflower season, but you could certainly visit Fredricksburg, LBJ ranch and/or climb Enchanted Rock. Or you could stop in Gruene or New Braunfels (between SA and Austin). It's too cold for the summertime activity of toobing on the spring/dam fed rivers but either town is an interesting stop on the way.

If you are staying in the area of Riverwalk, there is a trolley that we used to get around that area (Riverwalk, Alamo, Mercado, etc.) on one visit. The Riverwalk will have Christmas decorations up and is a very pretty view at night. You could always rent a car for the day for a trip outside San Antonio. How are you getting from Austin to San Antonio?
