San Antonio Riverwalk

Need suggestions for lodging and eating, also do I need a car? Sept.2 for 4 nights, 50th anniversary. Thanks

Pumpy Jul 18th, 2004 06:33 PM

Marriott Riverwalk is always a good choice. If you're planning on spending all your time on and/or around the Riverwalk, you can ride the trolley and thus not need a car.

Austin Jul 18th, 2004 06:45 PM

Mariott or Westin. Westin is known for their comfy beds...

Personally, after 2 nights, you may want to venture further from the Riverwalk and might need a car. What are your interests?

Food. Gosh, there are so many. I like Boudros on the Riverwalk. Most of the good Mexican restaurants are not on the Riverwalk. If you do a search on "Riverwalk restaurants" here, you'll find lots of suggestions.

Thanks, how about Drury Inn and Suites?

For GREAT Mexican - Mi Tierra in the market area. It was wonderful. You'll need a car/cab or bus but it's well worth it.

Here's a second vote for mi terra, great fun! Some say it's touristy but we thought the food was good and loved the festive atmosphere with live music.

We stayed a block off the riverwalk at the then-new ('99) holiday inn express and walked everywhere. Very happy w/our stay, which included 'home-made' (?) breakfast burritos in addition to their normal bfst fare. Would stay there again in a heartbeat.

Happy Anniversary! ((L))

I'm not familiar with the Drury Inn and Suites but as I recall someone mentioned it in a posting not too long ago--if you do a search of either San Antonio or Drury Inn San Antonio you should find it along with suggestions on places to eat.

If you're going to be here 5 days I agree that a car is a good idea--a day trip to the hill country might be nice! :-)

dcespedes Jul 19th, 2004 05:01 AM

Oooops, I should clarify that your search should be a search of this forum.

ellen_griswold Jul 19th, 2004 05:32 AM

Yes, i should clarify that we walked everywhere within the riverwalk area. However, we did use our car(van) to visit the many wonderful missions etc. and sites, which are a must see, especially if you have four nights. HTH. Have a great time!

We stayed at the Drury Inn & Suites in Sept '02--we loved it. It was very nice, but not too pricey, and in a very good location. We'd definitely stay there again. Also, I have a recommendation for dessert one evening. Try Dick's Landing for the Bambino Hueys--they are the most wonderful little desserts--get one for each of you, you won't want to share! Dick's is wonderful for sitting along the Riverbank and listening to jazz--the two nights we were there (had to go back a second night for the dessert!) they had a wonderful group playing some old-type stuff and an older lady sang with them--I just loved it!

Don't forget the Hyatt. Right on the Riverwalk and well-positioned.

halbo49 Jul 23rd, 2004 04:16 PM

Stayed at the Menger last weekend and loved it.
Hotel is full of history.
Right across the street from the alamo.
Very short walk to the riverwalk.
Did not have a car, but getting around was not a problem.
Did notice parking was pricey, around $17 a nite

Austin Jul 23rd, 2004 06:28 PM

Consider the Westin too...

pegelicious Jul 23rd, 2004 08:37 PM

Just a clarification--it's The Landing for jazz, not Dick's. (if you listen to NPR and have ever heard the Jim Cullom Jazz Band, sunday morning show, that's the Landing. very nice spot.) Dick's is a chain tourist bar with very large margaritas. Hotels, the new Westin is quite nice. Also La Mansion, a splurge but elegant and very good restaurant. All the major hotels are more than adequate, though. Boudro's is the best nice-casual restaurant with riverwalk tables. Have a wonderful anniversary!

mikemo Jul 24th, 2004 05:24 AM

I like La Mansion also!
Where do you live? Perhaps San Miguel de Allende, MX would be a better choice - no car needed there.

Yeah, no jazz at Dick's, although they do have live bands. The style ther eis a sing-along of Jimmy Buffet-type music. The best deal for drinks if their "Helluva Hurricane" which comes with a souvenier glass. I have several...
