San Antonio Lodging ?

We will be in San Antonio for a week in April 2004 (Easter time). Does anyone know of any hotels a little outside of the city that are nice. We are looking for something with a pool.
Thanks

Westin La Cantera.
Also Hyatt Regency Hill Country.
I prefer the former.

Ted is right on with his choices - both are outside the city but close enough to major roads to get to the downtown area without much hassle. I prefer Hyatt Hill Country Resort, especially for the pools, but either is great. April 16-25, 2004 is Fiesta in San Antonio, an annual city-wide frolic with loads of parades and other events. (www.fiesta-sa.org) If that's when you'll be visiting you are better off outside the city to avoid crowds and event traffic. Do get your reservations soon, though, as it is a very popular time in SA.

If you want to swim at Easter, you will need an INDOOR pool. Highs that time of year are usually around 70, and the water in an outdoor pool will be chilly.

I'll second the recommendation for making your reservations early during Fiesta, and for NOT staying downtown during this time unless you don't mind the noise.

Thanks all! Especially for the Fiesta tip. I new it was in april but was unsure of dates. We will definitely stay outside the city. Is it so unbearable people wise that we will not want to go?

Fiesta is a city wide celebration, sort of like a family style Mardi Gras. There are parades, carnivals, street fairs and other events that draw crowds throughout the ten day period. Most of the larger activity is concentrated in the downtown area and there are great park and ride services that are widely used. You don't need to worry about getting caught in a crush unless you put yourself in or near an event. If you are in lodging outside downtown you should be fine. You might want to take in some of the festivities, though - it's fun! If you enjoy parades, Friday's Battle of the Flowers or the Saturday evening Fiesta Flambeau are great fun. There are bleacher seats sold for both but you can also stand along the parade route for free. Just be sure to get there ahead of time and allow time afterward for traffic to clear.

Just an FYI on Hyatt Regency Hill Country. If you want to be far, far, far out of the city, it is the property for you. There is really not much nearby it except for Seaworld and one McDonalds.

For the positive side, friends stayed there with kids and never left the property at all. Said it was a great vacation.

If you do decide to stay in San Antonio but not in the downtown / riverwalk area, I can personally recommend the Doubletree near the mall and the airport. It is very luxurious and has a beautiful pool area with a jacuzzi.

Here's the Web site for the aforementioned San Antonio Convention and Visitors Bureau:

I thought the Westin La Cantera was wonderful when we stayed there.
