San Antonio - Hotel Help
 

Hi all,

I live in New York and will be visiting San Antonio from March 18 to March 21, 2010.
I am meeting friends and their 2 children there.

As we would need 2 rooms, does anyone have any suggestions for a reasonable priced hotel?

SDee, Can you give us a better idea of what "reasonable" is? I have a feeling that Texas reasonable may be quite different than New York reasonable. :-) You may have some problems with the time that you will be arriving because it will be Spring Break for many of the schools in the state. Are you looking for something on the Riverwalk? Close to Sea World? If you give a few more details, I'm sure you will get more responses.

seashell is correct, that will be a busy time of year. Please let us know your price range and what part of town you need and we will help if we can. I think you will enjoy SA, it is a great city.

Reasonable to me is under $200 as I am paying for the rooms (the children are my godchildren so this is their gift). I'd like to be near the tourist attractions such as Sea World and The Alamo. But since my friends have a car, if its a short drive, I don't mind.

I have stayed at both the Sheraton Gunter Hotel and the Crowne Plaza on Riverwalk, both were really nice. And, I am pretty sure both had a pool which would be nice for the children to have something to do. I like the Sheraton a little bit more, it seemed a little more upscale but the Crowne Plaza was in a really great location. When I booked, I used Quikbook.com and got rooms for under $200, however this was last year so the rates may have changed, but they usually have really good rates for big cities. Hope this Helps!

I don't think you can be "near" both the Alamo and Sea World at the same time!

You have the option of staying near the Riverwalk (which I would recommend) or closer to Sea World and Fiesta Texas. Since you will have a car, it will give you the chance to visit one of these but still come back to your room and walk to dinner and enjoy a boat ride on the river. A few years back we had a nice time at the Drury Inn Riverwalk (on St. Mary's St - travelocity showing avg rate of $156/night). It is at the end of the river and offers a free breakfast and has a pool on the roof. You can walk out of the hotel and catch the river boat tours. Not far from the Alamo and restaurants. Not "luxury" but very nice. Enjoy!

Just a clarification...it appears that there is a Drury Plaza and a Drury Inn on St. Marys. I'm referring to the Drury Inn.

SDee: To experience the real San Antonio, you really should stay on the Riverwalk. You will love it there-it's a truly unique place. There are many hotels there that should fit your budget-I would suggest something other than the giant Marriotts. Some with more local flavor are Omni La Mansion del Rio, Valencia, Watermark, Menger, and St. Anthony. There are also some wonderful restaurants, etc. on the riverwalk, too.

There are some resort style places on the outskirts -a Hyatt Hill Country and a new JW Marriott that kids would like, but with the weather still cool, you wouldn't be able to enjoy all the amenities.

Staying anywhere other than the riverwalk is just more Texas suburban sprawl, in my opinion.

I live in Austin so SA is usually a day trip for me. But I have stayed overnight once or twice and the Riverwalk is definitely the place to be. I like the Mariott Riverwalk. It's just a tiny bit over your budget (~$20/night) but I think it's one of the best. Here's a link if you want to check it out, maybe you can get a better deal on a discount web site.

I did a search on orbitz.com and there are quite a few great Riverwalk hotels available for your time frame that are well under your budget. I noticed the Omni La Mansion is $186/night and while I haven't stayed there, I have heard nice things about it.

If neither of the above will work for you, please take a look at orbitz or another site and throw some hotel names at us, then we will tell you what we know about it. :-)

BTW, it is required by law that all visitors to SA should sample the Tex-Mex cuisine. Enjoy your trip!!
