San Antonio hotel advice

Yes, I've perused the boards but am still unsure....

I will travel to San Antonio for a conference so want to be near the convention center. I originally asked for the Marriot Riverwalk, but they put me in La Quinta Inn and Suites. I have no objection to spending more than the $140/night they offer if I can be in a safe neighborhood (find some charm?) and most importantly, be near the convention center. Any advice welcome as I've never been to San Antonio.

If the La Quinta is very near to Riverwalk stay there if not stay at one of the Riverwalk Hotels.

If I remember correctly the LaQuinta is right across from RiverCenter Mall and it is considered a safe area. It will not have a view of the Riverwalk however.

For charm, I wouldn't consider La Quinta - would you consider the Menger? I consider it to have charm...just a thought

You may be getting a good deal if it is the La Quinta near Rivercenter. A view of the Riverwalk is not that big a deal, this is a relatively new property and as noted above it is just across the street from both the convention center and the Rivercenter.

The Crockett is right behind Alamo, and just a block to Riverwalk. Very nice!!!

As a followup - the La Quinta was quite an adequate albeit bland "cheap-chain" hotel. There was free internet access and free "breakfast" <cough>. As one poster said, it's a new property and relatively clean.

It's very close to the Marriot Rivercenter/Riverwalk hotels which are much nicer. The walk to the convention center took maybe ten minutes but it probably took fiftenn minutes to walk all the way through the monstrous convention center to the main hall "C"
Seemed very poor planning, to me but there was construction going on at the Market/Commerce St (?) main entrance.

The Riverwalk was lovely. Points outside the big hotels and Riverwalk did not feel very safe to me as a solo woman traveler. I was approached for money many, many times and found the "loiterers" intimidating.

If I were to go to San Antonio again, I'd book early and try to get into the Marriot, the Hilton or maybe the Menger... something right ON the Riverwalk because that seems to be the only safe place near the convention center to be at night.
