San Antonio for 20th anniversary?
 

DH and I will celebrate 20th anniversary in Feb 2007. Would SA be a good choice for a couple that is looking for a pretty, historic, fun, romantic place for a long weekend (3-4 days)? Want to eat a little, drink a little, walk around and maybe a round of golf. In the past we've enjoyed New Orleans and New York. Would like to go somewhere warmer but not necessarily hot.

February is one of those months where it's either warm or cool / cold depending on how strong the Canadian air masses are. When strong enough they make their way to South TX so be prepared either way.

I was downtown this past weekend--I love it there. The architecture, the River, all the different restaurants, and of course the Alamo... we live in the suburbs and complain often that we don't get downtown enough! So, yes, I think it's a good choice for a 3-4 day weekend.

There are a number of excellent golf courses in the area.

Also, February can be a nice time of year to visit the Botanical Gardens.

And if you're up for a road trip you could easily take a day trip to Austin and / or the hill country.

DH and I have lived here 17 years--we have about 3 years left. I actually look forward to the time we will return for DH's meetings so we can stay downtown along the Riverwalk! :-)

Yes, San Antonio is all that, and AnnMarie covered it well, including the weather. Two other places that fit your criteria and have similar weather would be Charleston or Savannah. Have you considered either of them? We've lived in Savannah and live in San Antonio now. If I could do any of those 3 cities, it'd be Charleston.

I will agree with the Charleston choice. I have been to all 3 and Charleston is the most romantic by far and has the best food. It is the most walkable city and has the
best access to the water, with the walks along rainbow row and battery park. Although in February you may still catch some winter.

DH would agree with the Charleston choice, too! He just loves it there!! :-)

Well, I do think SA is a pretty nifty place, but also agree that Charleston is great. It is smaller and has a more laid back vibe but is incredibly charming. I wonder, though, about the weather in February, though you could catch a cold snap in SA then, too.

As best I remember Seamus, although it has been 8 years since we lived in Savannah, winters were very similar to here, but with fewer really raw days. The ocean is a moderating factor in that area.

I've definately considered Charleston and have read lots of trip reports and info here on the city. I know its a favorite destination. I also think its a bit of an easier jaunt from Boston and SA. As of today I've more of an itch to see TX than Carolina. Thanks for the suggestions.
