San Antonio and Austin- am I trying too much?
 

Decided to take a quick post-Mardi Gras vacation from Wed 2/13-Sun 2/17. Thought we could drive to SanAntonio, spend Wed night and all day Thur, Fri drive to Austin (stopping for BBQ in Lockhart and maybe some walking/hiking somewhere), and spend fri evening and all day saturday in Austin. Too much? I know my husband wants to do Austin, and that would be fine for an adult trip, but was thinking of splitting it for my 12yo. I know she would enjoy the riverwalk, Alamo, and missions in San Antonio (I always did). Opinions?

That sounds reasonable. Leave SA early - you can get your BBQ for lunch and be in Austin early enough to have plenty of time left on Fri to explore. Outdoors - ? Zilker park, and don't miss the bats at sunset under Congress St Bridge.

We did exactly what you're planning (and didn't even stay the night in Austin - made it a day trip, including dinner at the Salt Lick). It worked out fine.

It sounds fine to me as long as you're not trying to do/see too much in either place.

BTW, no bats in February, so you don't have to add that to your list.

When we did it, it was just a little taste - in San Antonio, we were staying on the Riverwalk, also went to the Alamo, King William District and La Villita (waste of time). On the way to Austin, we stopped in Gruene for a bit (poked around shops, bought two pr of earrings that I still love). In Austin, we toured the Capitol building and wandered around 6th before meeting our nephew for dinner at the Salt Lick. Last day in San Antonio, on the way to the airports we took one of the Natural Bridges Caverns tours. Grand total of 2-3/4 days.

Thanks so much. I thought it seemed reasonable, but my husband has called previous vacation plans "the Ho Chi Minh trail". I like to do a lot. ;-) Any ideas on where to get a little outside time. I would love for him to see how beautiful the hill country is.

For your outside/hill country time, head to Enchanted Rock.

Between SA and Austin, and right next to the Caverns is the Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch which your daughter might enjoy.

If I were you, I'd find some place between SA and Austin to do your hike on your time schedule.

La Villita is a historical site. It's not for everyone, clearly, but it is historically significant as San Antonio's first neighborhood and the house where General Cos signed articles of capitulation to the Texas Army still stands.
