San Antonio
 

We're thinking about visiting San Antonio in late May. Is that a good time to visit? Also, what else is there to see besides the River Walk? We're willing to drive 2 - 3 hours in any direction to see the sites - but what? Also, restaurant recommendations would be great.

Fredericksburg is a great German town about 70 miles from SA. It has good restaurants, shopping and wonderful architecture. If you like to hike, Enchanted Rock, outside of Fredericksburg is worth a trip. I can give more details (and there are some on this board if you are interested).

In SA we like the Alamo, the missions, and some of the neighborhoods. Luckenbach and Gruene are also nice.

I went to San Antonio and except for Fredricksburg and the riverwalk that is all there is. I was very dissapointed. Pretty city but after 3 days I had seen it all. But it was worth the trip, but boy it it hot and sweaty!

Besides the Riverwalk there is many historic sights such as the Buckhorn Saloon, San Fernando Cathedral, the Alamo complex, the Market Place, & the missions. The San Jose Mission has a noon Marachi Mass on Sunday. Hill country would be a great drive for a day. Also Austin has a lot to see & a lot happening & would be an easy day trip. If you run out of things to do in this area after 3 days you're not trying very hard. However some folks just may not be interested in certain places or things but I think San Antonio is great. I will be doing a Texas road trip soon and included is San Antonio which is the only Texas city I have visited. I can't wait to go again.

I'm a native of San Antonio and am also going the end of May. If you like music festivals, Kerrville is having a big Folk festival. Kerrville is an hour from San Antonio in the hill country. It's a pretty area. There is a art/crafts festival happening over Memorial weekend. Here is the site: www.kerrville-music.com

Austin is also an hour and there is alot to see and do there.

Like hot weather? Then May is a good time to go to Texas.

Don't forget Schlitterbaun water park in New Braunfels -- a great place to cool off and named #1 waterpark in the U.S. by the Travel Channel.

see the War of the Pacific Museum in Fredrickburg. If you like caves, there is one just outside SA that has a nice tour

Also, don't forget that San Antonio has two major theme parks, Sea World and Six Flags Fiesta Texas.

If you go to Gruene (outside New Braunfels) they have great food. Their onion rings are some of the best around.

oops...The Grist Mill in Gruene have the best onion rings and food around.

As you can tell from the other responses, the Hill Country which is outside San Antonio is a more favored area than San Antonio itself. There are so many quaint little towns to visit, some of which others mentioned---Fredericksburg, Gruene, Kerrville, Boerne etc. Don't miss Bandera for an authentic "western style" little town. As some others mentioned, I too, was slightly disappointed in San Antonio itself, one day was plenty for me, but the Hill Country surrounding San Antonio (west of San Antonio and north of San Antonio) was awesome. Next year I want to go back when the blue bonnets are blooming (late March or early April). Have fun!
