San Antonio
 

We are going to San Antonio for our anniversary next spring. Always wanted to see/experience the Riverwalk area and its restaurants. I am looking for a nice hotel on the Riverwalk and restaurant suggestions. I have done a search for past posts and have come up with a few restaurant ideas, but always appreciate first-hand experiences. Also, many suggested touring the Mission area around San Antonio. Thanks for any help for someone who has never been there!

It's been a few years since we were there but we really loved San Antonio. I can't help you with a hotel on the Riverwalk as we stayed at the Menger next to the Alamo. The Menger has a great historic bar which you might want to check out. The Alamo is within walking distance of the Riverwalk. We went to the McNay Art Museum and really enjoyed it. It's in a Mediterranean style home and it's not so big that you can't take it all in. We also went out to the missions and enjoyed that. One of the best things we did was see a basketball game (San Antonio Spurs, I think). That was my first professional basketball game and it was great even though I don't follow basketball. We also went up in the Tower of the Americas and got a great view of the city. And, of course, we went to the Alamo which was interesting. We also saw our first and second Imax movies there. If you've never been to an Imax you have to go. Lastly, we ate Mexican food, lots and lots of Mexican food!! Enjoy your trip!

Hi there--you didn't mention how much you want to spend. There are a lot of hotels along the riverwalk but if you're looking for something special I suggest La Mansion Del Rio--beautiful hotel, with room balconies, along the river. For dinner, Biga on the Banks...but we are also partial to Boudros. Hope this helps--happy anniversary! :-)

We like the Wyndham St. Anthony which is a block off the Riverwalk. It is a very historic hotel, and also very beautiful!

We stayed at the Marriott Rivercenter. We liked it because it's right on the riverwalk extension, so we were "on the riverwalk" but not in the middle of the action, so it was quiet. For food we really enjoyed a place called Manduca, especially their grilled vegys; but the best part for us was walking along until the aromas or atmosphere of someplace invited us in.

We just returned from San Antonio and had the best time! I was there for a conference while my man wandered the city during the day. We stayed at the Menger in a room overlooking The Alamo. In the evenings, the horse carriages would line up along the street. The hotel is small but full of history and the bar is certainly unique (built in 1859 I believe). Let's talk food! The first night we dined at Cafe Ole on the Riverwalk. We sat on the balcony and watched tons of people walk by, were seranaded by mariachis (who played some mean bluegrass by request), and felt like we were in a wonderful bubble. The next night we braved a downfall to check out County Line for barbeque. That was a great find and a kick-fanny marguerita! We ate in the Tower of the Americas one night; it was very expensive (for us) but worth it as a treat. We would have been satisfied with the quesadilla appetizer but got a little carried away by the atmosphere and view. Our last great meal was at El Mercado's Mi Tierra. We both thought it was terrific and also a cool place (though a quick trolley ride from the Riverwalk). There was a Mexican bakery on site and fresh cut flowers in the bathrooms. I hope you have a great time there. We were both very favorably impressed with the city. I'd recommend not renting a car if you're only staying a couple days though. Parking can be quite expensive.

I stayed at a few hotels while on business, and my favorite was the Wynham St. Anthony. Although one block off the Riverwalk, it was a very nice, historic hotel. I've stayed at many Wyndhams, and they can be hit or miss, but this one is a hit!

I was there last week for a very quick trip -- wanted to try Bourdros -- wow it was busy! Didn't get around to fine dining, but had good desserts at Pesca on the Riverwalk. It was a nice atmosphere and the menu looked good if you like seafood. For romance, a little place called Delores Del Rio (also on the Riverwalk) looked really interesting for Italian food, and they also have belly dancing on some evenings. I will definitely try it next time I am there.

Got a great Priceline rate ($57 plus tax and fees) for the Hyatt on the Riverwalk, which was nice but pretty business-oriented and not really what I'd call romantic. Still, for the price it couldn't be beat, IMO.

The Riverwalk is so nice because you can stroll and drink as much as you want and not worry about having to drive. Just be careful not to fall in the river!

We stayed at the Drury on the riverwalk. We had a nice balcony room overlooking the river. It comes with a nice quickstart breakfast.
