Samsonite 28" wheeled duffel
 

Quick question - not sure how to determine if this is big enough. Looking for something to use for a trip of just under a week to England in November. I do pack light. I can get this specific duffel through a program at work very cheaply. Thoughts?

Hi gilly, we had a couple of wheeled duffel's that size, not sure of the brand. I gave them to a thrift shop. We hated them.

If you are going to be gone for a week and in that you pack light you do not, IMHO need luggage that big unless there is something unusual that you have to bring to England.

I would take a 24 inch, that should give you enough space to pack what you need and would be so much easier to deal with.

Big enough for what?

Looking at the specs, they are about 28" x 16" x 16".

I used luggage about 22" x 14" x 8" for most trips. Which is about a third the volume of that duffel.

Your version of light packing may be different from mine so I can't comment on the will it be big enough part.

I will say though, that a 28" duffle is pretty big and may be akin to lugging a stuffed pig on wheels - kinda awkward.

I had to bring a duffle on a recent trip due to flight requirements and suggest if you do go with the duffle make sure the opening opens wide. If not, it's a real pain to get into and see what you want. Not a problem though if your able to stay put and unpack.

A 28" is huge! I use a 22" wheeled bag and pack a super light weight bag inside, for the stuff I always end up buying at the end of my trips. I also a pack a strap, so that I can piggyback the second bag onto the wheelie if needed.

My bag is a regular (non-duffel) type, but I agree with cybor- make sure if you get a duffel style that the opening is good. Otherwise you end up having to "stuff" things rather than being able to lay them flat. In addition, the duffel may not give as much protection from squishing as a regular bar with some reinforcing in the sides.

If you truly do "pack light" (or anywhere close to it!) a 28" wheeled duffle will be WAY too big for you.

Be careful because it will be really easy to go over weight restrictions with a bag that large.

I agree, that bag may be a bit too big

I have a 26 inch wheeled luggage, and also a 30 inch adidas back...I pack heavy, however, and take lots of clothes

perhaps a 24 inch regular wheeled luggage would be better? Also, with the duffle, I found it a bit more difficult to really stretch the amount of space available to me the way I can with a regular luggage with extra pockets, etc.

I agree with the others. Unless you're packing more than one outfit per day, you probably don't need a 28" bag for a week's trip (unless you're packing bulky sweaters, etc.). I can do a 3 week trip in a 24-26" bag.

Also, because the duffels have no rigidity to them, anything that isn't made of material is at risk of being squished, etc. That can end up messy if you put your toiletries in the bag. You can find some nice wheeled uprights in the 24-26" category for well under $30. Just pay attention to the wheel style.

I think whatever size in a normal suitcase shape rolling bag, is easier to maneuver than a wheeled duffle.

28" duffel for less than a weeks stay? Way too much!

I only use our wheeled duffel to pack our ski clothes for ski trips. The clothes are so bulky that the duffel works well.

good point Birdie, that's when I see the large duffles used that look like they actually need 'em... people toting sports equipment like scuba divers, snorkelers, etc.

A 28" suitcase is HUGE. A 28" duffle may not be so huge. But I don't really know. But they are very different animals.

A 28" suitcase is usually 28" x 20" x 10". The Samsonite 28" duffel is 28" x 16" x 16". So, the volume of the duffel is even larger than a regular 28" suitcase.

I gave away a 28" duffle because when it was full I couldn't lift it (I am very short). Also, manuevering the 30" heft was a pain, kept whacking door frames and such.

26" or less was about right (esp., since you say you are a light packer).

Are you taking a lot of ballgowns in that 28 incher? I used a 21" wheelie for three weeks in August, and partially due to TSA rules am switching for my November jaunt to a 16x9 "carpetbag" plus a tote. I'm going to be moving around a lot and can't stand wrestling with luggage in trains and planes. Whatever you take, have a great week in England!
