salt lake to yellowstone,tetons

Driving from slc, is it better to go to w. yellowstone, or enter from the south, tetons? Senic, that is.

Well, if you want to see the Tetons you will want to enter from the south because Teton National Park is south of Yellowstone. (You probably knew this). There is hardly anything more scenic than the Teton Range.

From SLC go north to Ogden and pick up I15 through Pocatello to Idaho Falls. then take Hwy 26 over to Swan Valley and Alpine (in Wyo.) and go north to Jackson and thence to Teton National Park.

If you have a little more time and want really scenic, go to Ogden as before, then at Brigham City take Highway 89 to Logan. Stay on Highway 89 all the way to Jackson. This takes you past Bear Lake to Montpelier and over a summit into Wyoming. You will then be driving through the beautiful Star Valley. Be sure to stop at the town of Afton, at the foot of the Bridger mountains. It is charming and has, over its main street, a huge arch made of elk horns.

You may not have time for this, but if you drive up Swift Creek Canyon for a couple of miles, you will come to an intermittent spring which cascades down the mountain for a certain amount of time and then stops, to repeat the cycle. There are not usually many people there and it is awesome. I think the only other one of these is in New Zealand.

Have a wonderful trip. I was born in this area and as a child spent many a weekend camping on Greys River or the Snake. My father was a fly fisherman. We also camped often in Yellowstone.

jtrandolph,

I have my itinerary here at fodors for our return trip to GTNP and YNP end of August begining of May. I will come back and enclose the thread. I'm wondering if you would kindly look at my itinerary and let me know fi we can edit a bit so we can see this intermitent cascading falls? What's it's name, btw? I'm very curious about this. Thanks. Be right back.

Detour,

So JT, do you know my cousins in Freedom, the Heaps?

jtrandolph Mar 5th, 2008 03:19 PM

maria,

I am afraid that you are going in the wrong direction for Afton. You would need to detour 99 miles south from Idaho Falls and then backtrack.

Your itinerary is good. Save the intermittent spring for another trip. Oh, and it doesn't have a name that I know of

jtrandolph Mar 5th, 2008 03:24 PM

Well, Dayle, what a small world. I, too, have cousins named Heap, but am not in contact with any of them. I haven't see them for many years.

My grandmother was a Heap.
