Salt Lake City Hotel Advice

Hello,

I am planning trip to Yellowstone Park this June and the best airfare for me is into SLC.

So, rather than drive out right away, I am looking for one night on each end of the trip in Salt Lake City.

My hubby and I have never been here before so I am totally unfamiliar with the area.

I have points that I could use for these nights with either Marriott or Hilton but if there are other more recommended places to stay - we don't have to use points.

Thanks for your help.

I think you would be happy with either of the downtown Marriots. Downtown is only minutes from the airport.

Hi lindsyb,

I might suggest staying 1 nt in SLC one way and the other night in Park City. That way you get to see both and get to drive 2 different routes to/from Yellowstone.

There are 3 Marriotts in Park City, the 2 nicest are the Summit Watch (on Main St.) and the Marriott Mountainside at the base of Park City Mtn resort.

Park City is gorgeous in the summer and there is lots to do and see (and eat).

Have fun!

Hi Barbara!

Thanks Dayle and Barbara!

I am going to get out my Utah map and also Mapquest, but how far is drive from Park City to the airport? Just trying to see which end works best for distance and traffic. We arrive on a Saturday and depart on a Sunday if that makes any difference.

Airport to Park City is about 35 minutes.

We stayed at the downtown Marriott in Salt Lake City and it's a typical downtown Marriott (Starbucks inside, very comfortable bed).

Dayle, what's the THIRD Marriott in Park City?

The 3rd Marriott is not a timeshare development. It is on Sidewinder Drive near Prospector Square. I have stayed there twice - won on Priceline. It was a nice little summer getaway for cheap.

I live in SLC and have travelled to Yellowstone and Tetons many times.
Are you planning on entering Yellowstone through West Yellowstone or through the Teton National Park? It matters how you go. Also It can be very hot in June in SLC, or very lovely. If you are only looking for a place to sleep or if you want to explore SLC downtown is fine, otherwise Park City is a good suggestion ( don't stay at The Canyons resort). Park city has a nice main street and an olympic visitor's center that is great.

We always stay at a really cool boutique hotel called the Hotel Monaco. Complimentary wine and shoulder massages from 5 - 7 each evening. Downtown - very near the airport. Could even return car adn do taxi cheaply.

Thanks Everyone for all of your replies!

I like the idea of seeing a bit of both SLC and Park City since we've never been out this way before.

We were thinking of going up and entering through West Yellowstone and on our return trip driving through the Teton area just to see different things. I am guessing this would then be best to do SLC on Day 1 and Park City on our last day in looking at the map.

I was focusing on Marriotts and Hiltons because I have points that I could use although I did see there was that Hotel Monaco. I have stayed in the one in Chicago when I've been that way for business.

Thanks again!! More research to do now.

Dayle,
Why are you asking to get together> It seems rather unsafe to meet someone here and then come to your GTG. Is this a common Fodors practice? I am new here. Can anyone else comment?
Thanks

Kate, Fodors get-togethers are a tradition (I've been to one in SF)!

Kate, for the GTG's you meet in a public place (like a restaurant). You don't have to give your real name if you don't wish to, nor exchange personal information (address, phone, anything) with anyone. It is quite "safe". And it is fun to put faces to the people that you will see answering questions here.

We had one in Seattle and it was great. And I'd gladly come to the one in Park City if I were going to be in the area then. I'd love to meet Dayle---she has been a great help to me in my activities in the Snowbird/alta area.

Hi Kate and others,

Yes, Fodorites get together (GTG) all the time! Most of the posts for the GTGs are on the Lounge Forum nowdays.

I think it was Monica Peleggi (SP?) who first started them when she traveled solo to Paris a few years ago. She and others who were in Paris at the same time met up at the famous cafe Les Deux Magots (SP?) where they were to recognize her by the single, red rose! What fun. Monica then posted the photos on her web site. A great time was had by all.

Our Utah Fodorites are few and far between! So far Barbara and I and her husband have met, but it's going to be fun to see a couple new faces in April.

We keep trying to get enzian and Utahtea (who actually lives in the Bay area, CA), but so far no luck.

I think we need to plan a Moab GTG for the fall!

So join us in April Kate! I'll post again closer to the 12th and we'll figure out where we are going for lunch.

Ciao!

Thanks for explaining GTGs. I told my mom about the GTG thing and she laughed and explained. She went to one in China. I would love to come but, I am returning home from a 10 day Europe trip on 4-12. If any of you have suggestions I posted a question on the Europe talk.
Thanks and maybey I'll make it to a GTG sometime.

lindsyb- I would second the recommendation by queener for the hotel Monaco for the slc component of your trip. I love all the Kimpton hotels.

Dayle and Barbara S- looking forward to our GTG on April 12; it will be my first! We should see if any of the nice restaurants on Main Street have lunch specials. Maybe Zoom or Riverhorse or even Chimayo if there is a deal....it is so expensive for dinner there now. I love getting a discounted meal for lunch at a high end dinner place.

We always stay at the Mariott Residence Inn on about 3rd west, I think, near Pioneer park. It's an old hotel redone, has nice spacious rooms, and is withing walking distance of pretty much anything..also, they have pretty good bus/trolley service around. It was much enhanced after the winter Olympics there. p.s. is my home town,...I love it.
