Salt Lake City for 4-5 days
 

My wife and I will be spending 4-5 days in SLC to attend a conference. Would love advice for city and side trips.

Do you like to ski, by any chance?

Here's a good list of things to do. http://www.saltlakecityutah.org/attractions.htm. If you'll let us know what types of things you are interested in, we can be more specific.

Due to bad back skiing is out - but we would consider snowmobiling (never done that before) or sleigh ride w/ dinner?? I noticed there were several companies - any suggestions? I assume the best way to do this is to rent a car for the day and drive from SLC to Park City. What else might be good for one day in Park City?

There is much to do in Park City and you can stay busy there for more than just a day - even without skiing.

Utah Olympic Park - tours, museum, bobsled rides (although not with a bad back), watch athletes training

Historic Main Street - art galleries, interesting shops, fabulous restaurants

Snowmobiling, hot air ballooning, snowshoeing, spas, Egyptian Theater live productions, tubing, spring concerts at the Canyons.

Sleigh rides may be over for the season. Ski resorts in PC area all close on April 13.

Since you are coming in spring, I would rcommend taking a walk around Temple Square - the gardens are gorgeous!

Ditto to everything Barbara and Dayle have said. I would just add that another option is to go tubing. There is Gorgoza Park off Hwy 80 on the way to Park City and I think another one in Soldier Hollow. You can google it to see. You ride the tubes as you are pulled to hilltop and then ride down. It is fun for a couple of hours. There is plenty to do in Park city and SLC to occupy 4-5 days. If in SLC with a couple of hours to kill, I always enjoy catching a movie at the theatre in Sugarhouse which costs $1 to $1.50 per person. There is also a nice outlet mall in Park City just as you enter. Main Street is very cool and there are so many great restaurants in the area. I would try one of the local breweries as well if you like beer.

Sorry to piggyback on this post but we'll also be in Salt Lake City next week and I read someplace that the Mormon Tabernacle choir rehearses during the week and the rehearsals are open to the public. Is that true?

Yes, the choir rehersals are on Thursday evenings and free, I think about 8pm? You can check on the web. My aunt and cousin are in the choir and it's a big commitment.

The historic Tabernacle building is fascinating and the huge organ is amazing.

Piggyback anytime....

Any recommended restaurants. I read the Roof restaurant seems to be interesting - better during the day for viewing?

Our daughter is a voice major in college and she considers the Mormon Tabernacle Choir the "creme de la creme" of choral groups in the US. Your aunt and cousin must be very good indeed!

Perfect, then definnitely go! And yes it is and yes they are! My aunt got to sing a solo at the SLC 2002 Olympics Closing Ceremony. It was a total suprise as they just asked her to do it with 4 days notice and they didn't have a chance to tell the family. Here I am watching at home (ticket too expensive) and they announced her name. What??? So it was fun for her.

Just wanted to let you know that we returned from 5 days in SLC and really enjoyed getting to the Mormon Tabernacle Choir rehearsal!
They are totally awesome! We also got to go to a couple of the noon organ recitals there. As to your restaurant rec's we did get to "Bambara" and had what was definitely our best meal. Tried to get into "Cucina Toscana" but it was heavily booked. We did have a pretty good dinner at "Cafe Molise" Food better than average and a good jazz trio on the Friday night we ate there. Our favorite lunch spot was a small place near the Salt Palace called "Toasters"--very good sandwiches.
