Salt Lake City and Yellowstone Park

Three of us My husband son and I are arriving 17 September to Salt Lake City
And staying there until morning of 19 September which means we have only one whole day
What would you suggest we could see and do just in one day
Then we will drive from Salt Lake City to Yellowstone park where we will stay 3 nights in Old Faithful Lodge and would like to explore the park and surroundings as much as we can
Any suggestions please
Thanking you in advance

Why not drive to Jackson WY and spend a night there? That way you will get to see more of the Tetons before you go to Old Faithful.

Maybe that is a good idea. We have booked for three nights so have to check re canceling
the first night.
By the way. We come from Fiji where we live so we do not have very much knowledge about this area
And would of course have to check into the hotel in Jackson
Thank you for your suggestion

That is not a very long time anywhere, since one day will be spent driving to Yellowstone. Be sure to at least drive up the scenic route (Jordan canyon?), not just the interstate.
Where are you going after that?
SLC has Temple Square that is certainly worth taking a look. AND IF the Mormon Tabernacle Choir has an open choir practice, it is MORE than worth going to. Just beautiful.

Not suggesting they won't spend 3 nights, but as is the first night will be after a lengthy drive from SLC.
I'd be interested in what comes before and what comes after. Do they drive back to SLC? etc.

SLC is a nice town, but it's a city. I've made the trip from Dallas to Jackson Hole/Yellowstone, by way of SLC lots of times, and I would rather add a night in Jackson and drop a night in Salt Lake, if possible. The drive to Jackson is a pleasant 5 or 6 hours (I usually just head up I15 thru Pocatello and Idaho Falls, but there are other nice options). If you want to get to the Old Faithful Lodge, you can add at least 90 minutes. By stopping in Jackson you'll make the drive a lot easier and get to spend a little time in one of my favorite parks.

Thank you for all your suggestions. We have decided to go straight to old faithful lodge from Salt Lake City
We will spend Friday and Saturday staying in Yellowstone and on Sunday we will have to drive back to Salt Lake City as we will be flying out from there to Birmingham Alabama and then to New Orleans
Would there be another route going back to Salt Lake from Yellowstone
Is it better going through scenic way and coming back through interstate highway?
What is this scenic way ? Jordan canyon. How can we find the route once we get USA
Salt Lake City we have decided to do city bus tour and then check the Mormon church
I have heard they have choir practice on Thursdays which is pity as we will miss it but we will go and have a look anyway

The more time you can give to Yellowstone and The Grand Tetons, the better.

Elk will be in "rut" this time of year, so don't get that close to them.

Given your short time, this is what I would do:

Day 1 - Arrive in Salt Lake City; stay the night.

Day 2 (17 Sept) - Leave around 11a-12n for Jackson (lets you sleep in a bit). Be sure to take the route that goes over Teton Pass, very scenic and a splendid view of Jackson Hole from the top of the pass. http://mapq.st/14vwwiW You'll get in just in time for dinner; spend the night in Jackson.

Day 3 (18 Sept) - Begin a leisurely drive up through Grand Teton National Park into the southern entrance of Yosemite. This is VERY scenic. Spend 3 nights as planned at Old Faithful Lodge (18,19,20 Sept).

Now...this means that you will be driving back to SLC on 19 September. That's good; allow about 6 hours. You can either leave through West Yellowstone or back through Jackson (take the same route you took coming up, or just 89 down to I-80, less scenic but a bit quicker). Then spend the last night in SLC, assuming you are catching a morning flight out to Birmingham.

slcbbrown - was your old name bob_brown?

If so, thanks for some great advice you've given me; we think of you every time we drive over Teton Pass.

Sorry - NOT Yosemite; I meant Yellowstone, of course.

Need more coffee...

OK, I'm quitting now. Last correction - 21 September, not 19. Sheesh.
