Salmon run

Last June we took a cruise through the Inside Passage. At each stop guides talked about the amazing salmon runs. Unfortunately we were too early. What time of the year would be best to see the salmon in this area?

It varies by actual location and river but "summer months" are best. If you do a google search for "Alaska Salmon Run" you'll find plenty of links.

We were in Anan Creek in mid August. Saw lots of salmon, not jumping like you may be thinking about, but enough to draw the Bears, which was a more amazing sight.

I've know I've seen a site before that gives approximate dates for different streams and rivers in AK. There are different kinds of salmon although it probably doesn't matter which ones you are looking at.

Our last trip began in mid-June and the salmon started running in the Russian River south of Anchorage before 4th of July. We also walked a beach near Kenai and talked to net fishermen. It was very interesting to watch. One guy told us his wife told him not to bring home more than 250 lbs.

Our first trip was in early August and the silvers were running Bird Creek which is on the Seward Hwy south of Anchorage.
