I believe the state sales tax in Florida is set at 6%. Each county can add their own tax onto this. Tampa is 7.5%. There is also an additional gas tax that is levied by most counties, which is thought to tax the tourists. There is no tax in Florida for "services" such as haircuts, lawncare, drycleaning (these "services" are listed and defined by the FL. legislature). There is not tax for food groceries, other than prepared foods such as bought in the deli or in restaurants. There is a tax of 11% on hotels and rentals (such as condos or cottages) that "rent" for less than 6 months (this is often by-passed by a contract for six months that is then broken by the parties).
There are a few other strange exemptions but maybe this answers your question.
