Salem or Plymouth, MA
Before our three-night stay in Boston, we wanted to check out either Plymouth or Salem.
Any thoughts on which would be better for family of 4 (2 adults, 2 teens)?
Thanks,
Diane

Depends a little on taste, a little on time of day/day of week. If you are traveling on a Friday or Sunday, esp. in the summer, you can avoid more traffic going north than south. Plimouth Plantation is very interesting, working colonial-era farm, etc. But Salem not only has the Witch House but some wonderful old federal-era neighborhoods and promiximity to Marblehead, which has a quaint "old town" area and scenic bluffs and harbors. Depending on your time, there's really more to do on the north shore (Rockport artist-colony scenic town; Gloucester real fishing-city as in "The Perfect Storm").
I'll have to agree with 'Cilla here. Plimouth Plantation is a fabulous stop, full of history and worth a day (including time to board the replica of the Mayflower in town) but all in all, the North Shore and Salem has more to see and do, unless you were also spending time on Cape Cod. The Peabody Museum in Salem is a wonder of materials from the China trade era. There is a National Park headquarters with info on the city and tours through significant historical sites like the House of Seven Gabels, the Old Custom's House, Witch sites of course. You'd also be very close to the other cities Cilla mentioned. I'm sure the Salem tourist people would send you materials from that area. If you don't find enough to do, you can even take a boat into Boston and leave the car behind.

Another vote for the Salem area. The entire Cape Ann/North Shore area is beautiful and there's lots to do.

Thanks for your responses--Salem area it is then! We are spending a week in Cape
Cod, then heading to Salem area, and
plan to stay in Boston July 2 through the 5th to catch the Boston Pops Concert/4th of July celebration. Can't wait--any other recommendations appreciated! Thank you!!!
Diane
