Salem, Mass. - one day visit

My wife and I are going to be in Mass. the first weekend in October. We would like to spend one day in Salem. Can anyone recommend things to do and see? We have friends in the area so we won't need accomodations, but any restaurant recommendations would be appreciated as well.

Salem has lots to offer! If you are there around halloween, Salem puts on "Haunted Happenings". Check out the Salem Witch Museum, House of Seven Gables, Pickering Wharf, take a whale watch, or visit Marblehead. Fun restaraunts in Salem include the Rockmoor (on a barge-you take a launch to get there), and Salem Beer Works. The Rockmoor also has a cruise boat go out in the evenings offering grill-type food and music. You visit the harbors of neighboring towns--Manchester-By -The-Sea to name one of them.
Hope you have a good time!

We have been going to Salem during the Haunted Happenings weekends (Oct. wkends) for years. You will have a great time, there is lots of things to do. If you think that you would like to go back and spend the weekend again try the Hawthorne Hotel for lodgings. Only one problem though, you will need to make reservations at least 6-9 months in advance. But it is worth it! Have fun!
