Salem, MA - Where to stay?
I'll be traveling to Massachusetts with my mom and aunt in May and we want to spend a night in Salem. I haven't found anything other than B&Bs. Trying to keep the price to about $100 per night per room. Any suggestions for hotels in Salem or a nearby town? I've seen some places in Danvers, but I'm not sure if that's a nice town or not or convenient. Any suggestions or advice would be much appreciated.

We stayed in Danvers a few years ago when we wanted to visit Salem. It seemed like a good idea because we were also going to go to the Cirque de Soleil show when it was held just north of Boston. Sorry, I can't remember the name of our hotel but it was probably a Comfort Inn or similar. It was almost impossible to find off Rt 128 and we were really too far from Salem. If you do stay outside Salem, make sure you have good driving directions coming and going. There was also nothing around our hotel, sort of an industrial/office park area so we always had to drive to get any place. The Danvers hotel made it very inconvenient to go back to Salem to dine in the evening and take a ghost tour after being their most of the day for the Peabody museum etc.

The other advantage to staying at the Hawthorne is that you have a place to park the car and don't have to jockey for a space. It is in easy walking distance to the harbor, places to eat, the NP, Essex Peabody museum and most of the other sites in town.

You'll be hard-pressed to find anything for less than $100 per night anywhere around Salem in May, unless it is something like a Motel 6.
You will find it confusing getting into Salem no matter where you come from. I live in the area, and I got completely turned around the other day trying to drive through Salem.
And concerning Danvers, it was originally called Salem Village and is where many of the incidents of the Salem witch hysteria actually took place (it was part of Salem until the 1750s). The Danvers memorial to the victims is far superior to the Salem memorial.

I tried the Hawthorne, but there's a two night minimum, which is also an issue at many of the b&bs. I have given up the idea of keeping it to a $100 and will increase my budget, just need to find a place that will rent for one night!

You might want to consider staying at a B&B in Marblehead, a very historic seaside town only a few miles from Salem. I live a town away from Marblehead, and it's one of the first places I take visitors.
Just do a google search for Marblehead MA Bed Breakfast, and you'll see of list. I'm not sure of B&B prices, but I've driven past several of them and they look nice.

Have you tried the Salem Waterfront Hotel? I have no real info on it, except the location is great. A quick try did not seem to indicate a minimum stay.
