safety of beaches in zanzibar/pemba/

hi
i posted this on a similar thread but am still wondering:

for some reason i remember reading reports of volunteer students being held up at gunpoint on pemba and other very unpleasant daytime robberies at zanzibar's beaches in maybe 2005/2004 and that's why i never went.

was this false information? was this a crime wave that has since been curtailed? i either read it on us state department web site and or the bbc web page.

thanks in short if anyone knows the current crime situation on those beaches, or had read these reports, too?

p.s.

i'm asking because i may have a work trip to the region at the end of summer and dream of those beaches, but not if they are dangerous.

thank you

Going by various forums, what I feel is that Zanzibar is pretty safe and you don't have to worry
Check out http://www.africaguide.com/forum/tanzania/407.html

I've seen all positive feed back regarding safety issues in Zanzibar.

happy vacation

I was there last march and stayed at Bluebay beach resort. Most of the resorts have hired Masaii from the mainland to patrol the beaches and act as security day and night. They are so nice and really on the ball. They chase away all the beach boys. I really felt safe with them around. They will also keep an extra eye on you if you bring them bottled water, fruit, or other snacks once in a while. They appreciate everything.
One thing you should also know is that they really want your clothing. Don't leave anything hanging outside to dry.
