Safety at Night in Boston
#22
Boston's inner city is safe. I'd avoid the orange line
subway. Any Park in any large city after dark will have
a share of druggies and homeless. I'm a single woman living here and travel all over on foot or bike. Legal seafood, though a local chain really has safe seafood.I like sitting outside at their Harvard Square location. Legal has their own fishing boats and fish inspecters so I never worry aabout eating there. Unfortunately my husband died so I can no longer go to my favorite Legal's in Chestbut Hill.

Re the Paramount: I had a very bad experience with overcharging there and won't go back. Prices on the menu and the board apparently did not match what the cashier charged me (which was higher, and you pay up front) -- and when I (nicely) pointed out the difference, the cashier nastily said I can pay what she charged me or not get my food. The lower prices on the menu posted out front persisted for months after this incident, too. And I've seen a few Chowhounders complain about the same overcharging problem.
No way I'll go there again. Places that play the "prices subject to change if you don't watch our cashiers closely" game are places I don't patronize.
Re safety on the Orange Line: I haven't experienced problems there, and the only area where you might is the lower stretch between the Massachusetts Avenue stop and Forest Hills. It's very unusual, though, and there shouldn't be problems during the day. No vouching for some of the neighborhoods bordering some of these stops, though, especially Roxbury Crossing and Jackson Square, plus the areas located east of Ruggles, Stony Brook, Green, and Forest Hills.

Thanks again for the your comments & suggestions. They are all well noted and indeed help make a decent intinerary.
People eat & sleep in these establishments & their input from sites such as this are more important to me than sites that give review after review where a person must attempt to read between lthe lines. I still read those reviews but they are processed differently than those from this site. I believe you guys!
We probably will use the Orange Line on a limited basis. We will mostly use the Red Line, round trip to Harvard Yard and round trip to JFK/MASS. We are hoping to take the ferry from Charlestown to the South Pier after doing the Freedom Trail but most all else will be walking unless one of us become lame along the way.
I pretty much have put together the itinerary for Boston (4 overnights), Cape Cod (2 overnights), back to the north to visit Minuteman National Historic Park (one day), drive to Salem for overnight, visit Salem and do 2nd overnight before departing for Cape Ann and Portland, ME.
