Safe areas in Washington D,C.

My husband and I will be visiting Washington DC in September. We are seniors and considering staying at The Eldon Suites, has anyone stayed there? ,and is the area safe to walk at night ? Also how far from the metro stop?

The only Eldon Suites I see online is the one by the Washington Convention Center. It looks like it's about three blocks from the Mt. Vernon Metro station, a bit further from the Metro Center station.

The area does empty out a bit at night, certainly compared to the hotel areas a bit further south (for instance, the hotels centered around the J.W. Marriott, or the area right around the Gallery Place Metro station). How safe you feel will probably depend on how comfortable you are in cities. I'm afraid I don't have personal recent experience of walking to & from the Mt. Vernon metro station at night.

Most of DC where tourists are or stay is safe, unless they try to get a cheap motel out on NY ave or something -- however, in terms of relative safety, I personally would not recommend you stay around Mt Vernon metro station, of all the other possible choices. It is not one of the better areas, and seem to recall at least one tourist has actually been killed (or at least shot) around there, several years ago. Not to be alarming as that isn't common, but it is really not an area I would choose.

I come and go from the Mt Vernon Metro station several times a week and think the area of that hotel is safe, but very boring. If you like to walk around looking for shops and dinners, 9th and L is not where you want to be. There's much more street life, at all hours, south of K Street.

I dont think the area is unsafe, just as kayd says, boring -- I would want to stay closer to restaurants so u can grab dinner and be near your hotel after a day of sigthseeing.
