Mahya, if you bid on Priceline and get a hotel you don't want, too bad! (So don't do it if you're not comfortable with the anonymity of it -- that said, Hotwire also has very good prices, and you can usually identify the hotel you're going to get by looking at the amenities listed and comparing them to the "usual" hotels on betterbidding.com. Also, priceline only guarantees a room will fit two people, which means it may have only one bed, whereas on Hotwire, you can specify 3 or 4 people in order to guarantee you'll be getting two beds in a room).

Dear San Franciscans,

another question - I intend to get around by trolley as much as possible and for fun - and from reading I gather it makes stops on Lombard Street , is that true ?

What other streets does it stop on?

Something MUST be going on that weekend. I checked Hotwire and the least expensive 4* hotel is $209.00 (for 4 people in one room). Looking at betterbidding, it's likely the Hilton Financial District. I've never been in the hotel, but it's in a good location for tourists (near/in Chinatown, which means walking distance from North Beach, Fisherman's Wharf, the Bay, Union Square, etc.)

Are you all sharing one room, or are you looking for two rooms? Hotwire has a number of choices in the 4* category for rooms for 2 for under $200.

How about Hotel Triton?? I just checked and there are several rooms available on your dates, the lowest one is a small room for $209, but there are larger rooms available also. It is a very nice hotel - my daughter has stayed there a number of times when she was in SF on business. It is just outside the gate to Chinatown and upstairs from Caffe de la Presse, a very good place to eat. DD said she was very comfortable staying there alone and it was a short walk from BART, near bus lines, and walkable to the F line trolley - and the cable car. I would stay there myself! Check it out. It is in the Kimpton Group of hotels and has a very good reputation, especially with the younger business people.

Also, I just checked the nicest place I know in North Beach : Washington Square Inn. It is a bed and breakfast, is very nice, and has several rooms available for $189 and $199. This is the area you wanted and it is very walkable.

Hey Guys, there is some confusion and it's my fault.

I am a solo traveler, but the OP was asking for 4 people. I had tagged onto this thread by the OP for 4 travelers.

Yes there are two big conventions going on.

I just checked on one place I was interested in on Lombard street and they had doubled the price. BRAK.

I've written them to see if the original price still stands. We shall see.

Do you not want to tell us the "place or two" you found (and give us a chance to tell you why they're fabulous or simply awful )?

Columbus and Chestnut/Francisco area in the North Beach - and I saw that the trolleys and buses go past, which is perfect for me cause that's how I intend to get around.Walking distance to Fishermans Wharf and the other places right ?

I just read so much unpleasant stuff about the Union Square area and I woulnt know whether I was East or West or in a good area of town or not..and I didnt want to do the hills of the Nob Hill area although they had some nice things there.I couldnt figure out what Mission, Castro, Hayes and all those other areas were so I really stuck with the tourist area near the wharf.

Hope I did good, cause nobody told me that it was convention month and all the hotels would be booked to the gills. So there you are

Okay, SF, are you ready for a GTG? maybe on Saturday the 30th for a late lunch or early dinner. I have a late plane out on Saturday so maybe I dont have to be at the airport until 8:30 PM.

I read that San Francisco does Halloween in a big way the week before...so even though I'll be leaving the night before Halloween I guess I'll still get to see some of the
fun.

Now where would you say is the best Dim Sum restaurant ?

We only had one place here that served Dim Sum varieties, and they sold the restaurant..the new owners dont serve Dim Sum !

Mahya--since your questions are no longer related to the thread title, you may be better served starting a new thread. BTW if you do a search for dim sum and San Francisco, I believe you may find the answer to your question.
