Sacramento Sheraton?

Well, I was counting on the new Embassy Suites in Sacramento being open for our stay next week, but got a phone call with the bad news yesterday, they are pushing back the opening until I don't know when. So, Suzie, Kal, anyone? We are now considering the Sacramento Sheraton. I can get a room on the club level for $156 through Orbitz. Is this a good deal? What do you get with the club level? I know there is a pool, which would be good for the kids. Thanks anyone, for any info!

kal Jun 12th, 2002 10:06 AM

S'spike,
Yep. Too bad about the Embassy Suites. When it is FINALLY open, it should be nice. One of Mrs Kal's clients did a lot of the art work for the lobby so we're anxious to get in and see it.

The Sheraton Grand? The old Public Market Bldg in Downtown? I think there may be a Sheraton in Rancho Cordova (may have been bought by Marriott?) so that's why I ask.

If the downtown location, very nice hotel. Good location. We stayed there for 2 nights over MemDay weekend for the Sacto Jazz Fest. We also stayed there last year for the Jazz Fest right over it's grand opening weekend.
I believe our other Fodor Friend, "BetsyBuch" enjoyed her stay there, too.
You can park across the street in the pub parking garage for $10/day since you're staying there. If not, valet parking is like $20/day and they use the same parking garage and it takes forever to get your car.

$156 sounds good but have you tried Priceline or Hotwire? You may be able to get it thru them or get the Hyatt, located right across the K St Mall from the Sheraton Grand.

And I can't tell you about Moxie's because it's our little secret in Sacto and I got yelled at last time I recommended it. ;-)

Hey...mini-Fodors GTG in Sactown??? Sue'spike buys the "Hef" at Ricver City Brew Co!
Kal

Suzie Jun 12th, 2002 10:12 AM

Just talked to exec staff who arrange stays for very picky BOD (they whine if the t-paper is hung the wrong direction!) Things they didn't care for at Sheraton Downtown:

Valet Parking too expensive when added on to room rate.
Interior has that wherehouse look because of the exposed pipes trying to keep with marketplace decor.
Suggested calling hotel directly for room rate as they will be trying to get the Embassy customers to their place in the next couple of weeks. State rate in town is $84 so they'd be used to that due to all the state business. Good Luck Susan!

Susan Jun 12th, 2002 10:13 AM

Thanks Kal! I'm just worried about the priceline thingy since I could end up with the Hyatt and don't want to get food poisioning ;-) Mini Fodors GTG poolside at the Sheraton on the 19th? I'll be having to keep my eye on the two fishies I've spawned, but will be in post-Hawaiian bliss and we can talk story.

Hey, at the Sheraton Grand will I be walking distance to the Railroad Museum?

Susan Jun 12th, 2002 10:17 AM

Oh, Suzie, I'm not sure those are the kinds of things I'd have problems with. And I'm hearing the tip on the parking across the street from Kal and on the biddingfortravel board too. Otherwise, do we all think this is the best spot for the big post-island letdown? Room service might be key. I'm also going to ask for a late checkout since we're getting in at midnight the night before (courtesy of Hawaiian). Mahalo, kids, for your good words of advice.

Suzie Jun 12th, 2002 10:18 AM

Might be a bit of a hike for your little fishies. Easy drive though and there is a parking garage right across from it.

Suzie Jun 12th, 2002 10:21 AM

My post refers to the Railroad Museum in old Sac.

I've stayed at the Hyatt and the Pool is right outside the bar and right on L street. For that reason I think it's not the best pool or location for your fishies. The corner rooms though are really fab with a great view of the capitol building all lit up.

kal Jun 12th, 2002 10:36 AM

OK. Trying to actually work AND follow this board today so I'm sooooo confused!
Plus AlexHulaGril has me dreamin' about a big hunk o' carrot cake (Claimjumper's?)
When ya going to HI? Next week?
Getting back to Sacto and staying how long? How mcuh was the fare on Hawaiian if you don't mind me asking?

The walk to the Rail Mus. is a nice one if you go down K St Mall. Walk thru the Capitol first and see some of the new monuments in the park. Downtown Plaza is a nice shopping center and Old Sac is like a small Fr. Qtr without the Go Cups!

Suuuuuz, How do you know you can watch your kids in the pool from the Hyatt bar!?!?!? heh heh heh.
Kal

Susan Jun 12th, 2002 10:50 AM

Kal, so many questions! Hawaii baby on Friday! One night in Sacto afterward, due to the midnight arrival. Paid $385 for Hawaiian's new flight to Honolulu! No Go Cups? Fughetaboutit .... Loved that about Nawlins. Suzie, Kal's making the Hyatt sound better and better ;-) The Sheraton website says there's an IMAX theater one block away?

It's gonna be hotter than hades next week in Sacto, isn't it? But, I know, it's a "dry heat!"

kal Jun 12th, 2002 11:05 AM

You Dawgette! Forgot all 'bout your trip being sooooo soon!

The IMAX is right behind the Sheraton on K St mall.

We can make Hades jealous! That's why God invented beer and a fridge!
Kal

Suzie Jun 12th, 2002 11:23 AM

IMAX was showing something we wanted to see was that the space one? X Games? , gosh bad memory! Try the Esquire Grill next door (to Imax)for lunch or dinner. Hey Kal that's a long hike for kids to make down K Street Mall and then the oposite end of Old Sac. "How much further?" (use the whine for that one). If you need a beer in old sac try Fannie Anns. Ice cold mugs and lots of things to look at. If you can't make it to the tunnel without a stop you can get one at Sacto (or River City) Brewing Co right outside the women's Macys. Yes they have a men's macys and a women's macys. So many clothes so little space.

Susan Jun 12th, 2002 11:35 AM

Okay kids, it's booked, Sheraton wins. We will be sans car that day since Mr. Spike is going to pretend to go to work for part of the day at his co's office in that neck of the woods. Either we'll hang by the pool or check out the IMAX. With the kids what can I do? They're too big to carry, too small for drinking the suds themselves. Doesn't mean I can't have a cold one with lunch, right?

Incidentially, the club level rooms come with a continental breakfast and are higher up, according to the reservationist. Just FYI for anyone else considering this hotel and has actually read through this whole thread! ;-)

Mahalo, Suzie and Kal! Come find us by the pool, if you are free!

Suzie Jun 12th, 2002 12:13 PM

So Susan, the Embassy site will let me make a reservation for the 20th of June but not the 19th and of course not the 18th. What's the deal? Exec staff in the office have a meeting there day after tomorrow. Told them they would probably have to help finish the room before the meeting can begin! ;)

kal Jun 12th, 2002 12:17 PM

S'spike,
Inexpensive, but not "free"!

The 19th may be "do-able". Maybe even Mrs Kal can goof off that day, too, if she can rearrange her schedule?
Time???

Isn't there a children's museum in that area, Suuz?
You can ride a train from the Rail Museum down a few miles and come back.

Sheraton may have a free shuttle to various locations downtown.
Here's the site for the local Sacramento Magazine.
http://www.sacmag.com/index.shtm

I thought the EmbSuites Gr'Opening was the 19th so maybe all the mucky mucks are booked that night?
Kal

Suzie Jun 12th, 2002 12:34 PM

Discovery Museum Like old Sac is about 1 mile away.
Hey just to get back to the weather for next week. It shouldn't be hades it's expected to be upper 80's to mid 90's. Is that bad? I can take mid 90's, hate the 100's.

kal Jun 12th, 2002 01:30 PM

S'spike, Check and see if the shuttle does do the courtesy drop off/p-u service. Sutter's Fort is about the same distance away and is still pretty nice to visit.
In addition to the Esquire Grill, there is a pizza place located across the mall from it so the kids can get some pizza. Gallgher's and The Broiler are good too.

Suuuuuz, As a quick OT aside, you'll be happy to know we canceled last weekend's trip to Napa. Too hot AND windy to ride bikes so we actually acted like adults and finished up some landscaping in the back yard!

Also, speaking of "Esquire" and Sonoma (Ok, it's not Napa), you see this month's Esquire w/ Pacino on the cover?
Good article about "Eating Sonoma" and "Where to get full in Sonoma".
Ahhhh, Ol' Quirico at Della Santina's!

Also mentions the usual Sonoma suspects, Girl-Fig, SMI, Sonoma Hotel, Genl's Daughter.
Kal

Susan Jun 13th, 2002 09:19 AM

Good ideas, all of them, and I'm writing them down. Thanks! Looks like me and the kids could keep busy in Sacramento for more than one day.

Suzie, did you call the Embassy Suites? I was afraid this would happen, even called them last week and they said everything was on schedule. Maybe they have the meeting rooms open but not the hotel rooms. Upper 80s, mid 90s isn't bad when you have a pool and air conditioning! We've had such a hot week here in the bay area, I just want a warm ocean into which I can dip my toes.

Mahalo!

Suzie Jun 13th, 2002 09:29 AM

Exec staff are going to the meeting there today. I don't think I can get you the information you need before you go though as I don't think they'll be back before I leave today. I will post what I can though! Aloha and have a great time!

Betsy Jun 13th, 2002 02:23 PM

Kals other Fodor Friend :-) checking by. Just running by the computer at the moment, so only skimmed the thread. My colleagues and I stayed at the Sacto Sheraton for $45/night in April thru Priceline. Only two 4-star hotels in downtown are the Sheraton and the Hyatt, so if you bid on a 4-star in downtown Sacto, you'll get one of those. Either would have been OK with us. Go for it if you're still interested.

janis Jun 13th, 2002 07:08 PM

Couple of tips - there is a shuttle bus - motorized cable cars - that run from the convention center (right at the Hyatt and the Sheraton) along the K street Mall and into old Sacramento so the kids wouldn't have to walk all the way to the railroad museum (which is a fantastic place for kids or adults).

The Esquire Grill is great and very convenient to the hotel - but another very good restaurant if you venture into Old Sac is the Rio City Cafe. Good food and right on the river between Tower Bridge and the Delta Queen with deck seating and a lovely dining room if it is too hot out by the river).

the previously mentioned River City Brewing company is good for beer and food and OK for the kids too since they have outdoor seating in Downtown plaza and they would have to sit in the bar area.

Suzie Jun 19th, 2002 08:33 AM

Looks like the Embassy is having it's opening today 6/19. Exec Staff who visited last Thursday described it as "not fisnished". Wonder how the first guests will like their stay. They are sold out for the first few weeks.
