Sabino Canyon?
 

I'm planning a short trip to Tucson in early March, and have been checking out recommendations on this board. So far, our plans include one of the Saguaro NPs (probably west because it's near where we're staying), the AZ Sonora Desert Museum, and a visit to the San Xavier Mission. Sabino Canyon pops up here occasionally. Is this a "must see" ?

Sabino Canyon is a nice wet spot in an otherwise dry desert. There is a shuttle that you can take up the canyon or you can walk the gradual gradient. Several bridges constructed by the CCC in the 30's span the creek. It is a very popular walk/run.

A big second "YES" to bigtyke's response. I would think it the perfect time of year to enjoy Sabino and the ASDM.

Another endorsement. Take the tram up and hike down. It's a fun walk...and if you're lucky, the spring thaw will create little rivers across the road and you'll take off your shoes and wade across.

Also, since this is our first time in the area, anything we should be aware of prior to heading out on short hikes, e.g. snakes, bugs, and how should we be prepared?

In early March the snakes should still be in hibernation, but if you see one do not try to touch it, move it, kill it. That is when most people are bit. Not much to worry about as far as bugs on a hike. Just use common sense and you will be okay. Remember to take plenty of water even for a short hike, it is really dry in AZ, and put on sunscreen. Some nice essentials in addition to water and sunscreen for a hike in the desert: comb for removing cacti needles, hat, cell phone (only for use in an emergency, please)small mirror for signaling if lost and a camera.
Another vote for Sabino Canyon. There are also hikes beyond were the tram drops you off. Get a trail map when you check in.
