Houmon, I think you are thinking of highway 1 not 101. 101 does not run through Carmel. In Carmel I like the Candlelight Inn and the Coachman's Inn. If Best Western's are ok than one of the nicest is the Seacliff Inn in Aptos. It's within walking distance to Seacliff Beach.

Thanks to all who replied-it really helps when I am trying to locate info for trip which contains travel of four different states(including home state-five)! Lots to research-fun though-really my favorite part, but this is the most extreme! Hope I don't get somewhere and find out I didn't rent a car-Just kidding-At least I have about a month to research.

Hi, Houmom!

I live just over the hill from Santa Cruz and drive to/from SFO all the time.

When you exit SFO airport, take 101 NORTH-bound.

Immediately after you get on the freeway, you will see signs for Interstate 380. Take 380, it's very short.

Once on 380, start moving into the left lanes, these will curve down to Interstate 280 headed for San Jose.

Take 280 all the way down to San Jose, you shouldn't meet with a tremendous amount of traffic. About 30-45 minutes on 280, you will see signs for 85 headed for GILROY. Take that.

You will most likely meet with commute traffic on Highway 85. In normal traffic, it'll take you about 15-20 minutes to get to the junction of 85 with Highway 17. It'll take longer to in commute traffic.

Highway 17 leads over the mountains to Santa Cruz. You may meet with some traffic when you get on 17, you might also want to drive slower as the curves on Highway 17 may make you feel like you're driving the Indy 500!

If your stay is short, I'd suggest not checking in any luggage if you can at all help it. That will cut down on the amount of time you have to spend at the airport.

Have a good time!
