S.F. hotel / car rentals

I'm in the process if planning a few days in S.F. After staying in S.F. we want to rent a car and visit some family. Do I assume that all the car companies will have pick up places that we can get to easily enough ? I was hoping to stay in Union st. area or fiancial area from reading the posts. Any info. or suggustions would be appreciated.

I would be surprised to learn you can't get to any pick-up place in the city by bus (or walk) and drive back to pick up your family and luggage.

Are you staying in the Union Street or the Union Square area?? Not many hotels on Union Street - but plenty on Lombard Street just 3 blocks away.

Union Square is in the downtown area. Union Street is in the Cow Hollow neighborhood - several miles from Union Square.

FYI - We are doing something similar in March. We will be renting a car in town [they have a couple of locations - we are getting ours at O'Farrell] and then driving around [Sonoma and Monterey] for 4 days. We will return the car to airport when we leave.

I was able to book Dollar with an in city pick up and drop off at airport with no one way fee. I also got lower rates, since the airport rates/taxes apply only if you pick up at airport.

I Used promo code 350. We got a compact car for $22 a day!

Deb,

Make sure you don't travel to/from Monterey during commute hours. The drive time can triple if you are not careful

baxeo - We will be driving from Healdsburg to Monterey area on a Tuesday. What time would be safe to leave Healdsburg so that we won't get caught in traffic? I am figuring 3 hours drive??

We will head to Half Moon Bay for our last day and night and go from there to SFO for a noon flight. I am figuring an hour for that, leaving HMB at about 9am. Will that work?

Thanks,
Deb

Yep. You'll be able to rent from an in-town location from most agencies. I picked up a car from Hertz just a couple of blocks from my hotel.

Great deal, Deb. I may try to book the same :-)

Deb--Whatever route you intend to take you need to get through the San Jose area before 3pm, when traffic starts to get heavy .
