RV Camping in mountains of AZ
 

We will be travelling to AZ next April and are staying at a campground in Lake Pleasant, AZ for a week. We want to spend the next 5 days camping in our RV (oxymoron?) in the mountains north of Phoenix. Looking at Payson, Flagstaff, Tonto National Forest. Can anyone recommend a campground that will accommodate a 32 foot 5th wheeler? We would most preferably like something in one of the national forest or state parks. Not a formal RV Resort. Natural, not super close to our neighbors, etc. Hookups nice, but not mandatory. I looked at several campgrounds in Tonto, but they don't seem to be able to accommodate an RV of our size.

Buy a campground guide from Good Sam and/or Woodalls. Read each campgrounds description. If necessary call them.

I don't think there are any state parks in Tonto National Forest that have RV camping.

Coconino National Forest is by Flagstaff. Tonto is around Payson. Those are the two you'll need to search.

This site seems to have decent info on the national forest campgrounds and I think it might be easier to read than the official national forest website.

I've only tent camped in Tonto so I can't help with specific recommendations but hopefully the links will get you pointed in the right direction. It's a beautiful area of the state.

Thank you for the references. It appears many locations in Tonto don't open until May, but I think we have enough information now to find a good spot.
