Runyon canyon and Joshua tree
This will be a trip report but it isn't yet because we haven't gone on the trip yet. But everything, the questions, answers and report will all be here eventually. Isn't that exciting?
My wife and I are staying in a Airbnb off of Hollywood Blvd near runyon canyon for 3 nights. We'll have a rental car. Mid march. A friend opened Botanica, a restaurant we want to go to. And we want to go to the Getty. Maybe the beach. Then we go for 3 nights to Joshua tree, staying at the Cambell House in 29 palms. We hope to hike in the park, swim in the pool, and look at the stars. Do you fodorites have other nifty suggestions for us? |
Ok, not that exciting. Yet.

By labeling this a trip report, people who know abut the area and could answer questions might not open the thread.

I think you're right. It seemed like a good idea at the time...

On the way to Joshua Tree you could stop for a hike at Big Morongo Canyon Preserve
Home Page for Big Morongo Canyon Preserve 29 Palms is really grim. But you could do an excursion to Pioneertown, Pappy & Harrietts survived https://www.pappyandharriets.com/ As far as JT, in addition to the NPS website, there is Joshua Tree National Park Association - and www.desertusa.com Favorite hikes include Barker Dam, Lost Horse Mine and Keys View. I also like to do a driving tour that exits out through Cottonwood into Indio. |
Great suggestions, thanks!

Also great suggestions for near by palm springs (the aerial tram sounds like fun) in another thread:

santa, we are just in the beginning stages of planning a trip to Joshua Tree and Palm Springs next October. I'll be following your thread.

We've arrived. We left DC very early. 6am. We had frequent flyer miles to use. Long term parking. The trick is to park where the shuttle bus is going, not where it's already been. Also, the movie selection wasn't grand. Justice League: Batman, Superwoman, Superman and Somebody Else. Was the ending ever in doubt?
Well, anyway, here we are. Declined insurance on the rental car. Despite clerk's strong advice. I do try to floss. Our airbnb is very nice. Not cheap, but nice. West Hollywood. We went to a Mexican restaurant, Compadre, and Amy Adams sat at the next table. Seriously. Somebody took a selfie with her but my wife and I are too reserved for that. The last time we went to Los Angeles, Santa Monica actually, somebody thought I was Kurt Vonnegut, who was already dead. People here are very celebrity conscious. Then we drove to the Griffith Observatory and walked up a very long way from the free parking lot to the big white observatory and looked all around at the city and the Hollywood sign. There's a museum explaining things like how our sun is really small relative to other suns and why the parking lot is so far away. Then we drove to the Tower Bar which is where celebrities used to hang out. Then we went to a Thai Restaurant, and home to our airbnb. I'll try to attach some pictures. Today we'll go to the Disney Music Hall, and tomorrow the Getty. Sunday we go to Joshua Tree. Suggestions welcome. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...5225e74aca.jpg |

Breakfast in our little cottage. The host provides yogurt, cereal, fruit, coffee. Very nice. Then, off to the Broad, where we splurged and bought $25 tickets to Jasper John' exhibit. Jasper John' does American flags and other stuff. You sophisticated fodorites knew that already.
Then we had a tour of the 3rd floor which is free. We saw stuff by Jeff koons (balloon dog), basquit (graffiti), Lichtenstein (brad cartoons), Andy Warhol (soup cans) and an incredible assortment of other contemporry artists. We went on a tour. It' pretty amazing how many ways there are to be creative. It's like realizing how many different ways there are for people to be screwed up. Then we went on a tour of the Disney Concert Hall, designed by Frank Gerry. Lots of curvy stainless steel. Hard to believe it doesn't leak. Then we paid $25 for parking, came home, and took a nap. Pretty darned exciting. |
Santamonica, loving your report so far :)

In LA plan a visit to the Museum of Jurassic Technology (Almost Current Exhibits ), and see in particular The Eye Of The Needle and The Life and Work of Henry Dalton

I'm very sorry, Michael. I didnt see your suggestion in time. Now we're in Joshua Tree. Campell House. Near Oasis visitor center. Napping. Preparing to hike.
Yesterday we went with friends to the Gerry. Beautiful modern building and garden. You take a train grom the parking garage to the top of the hill. Introductory tour. Drawing by Michelangelo who was very secretive and burned most of his drawings. Then a landscape of Rome by Turner and a picture of Mary, Jesus, John the Baptist and Mary Magdalene by somebody else. Finally, an exquisite papal jewelley chest wih 74 hidden drawers. So that was that. BTW, the architect of the getty is a metoo# sort of guy. I don' know about Turner and the others. Then we walked on the 'boardwalk' in Venice where I couldn't get a rental scooter app to work, went home, showered, and then went to botanical, a snazzy restaurant in east Hollywood opened by the daughter of a dc friend. Very nice and, you won't believe this, at the next table: Jake Gyllenhaal! Two days in Hollywood, two restaurants, and we sit next to Amy Adams and Jake Gyllenhaal! We didn't make a scene. We be cool. No selfies, no nothing. This morning we left LA and drove in a straight line for two and a half hours to Joshua Tree. Where we will go hiking, utilizing my new hiking shoes from walmart. When dw wakes up. |
SantaMonica, just a friendly reminder, you can now add photos to your report on Fodor's.
