Rte 441 v Rte 40 in Smoky Mtn Area?

My husband and I from Mass will be driving out of Asheville (after traveling part of the Blue Ridge Pkwy) on our way west and would like to drive through the Smoky Mtns. My fear is that traffic will make for a long drive on 441. Is Rte 40 a scenic route? It looks as if that would save us a good amount of time. Can someone give an opinion? Thanks.

Route 40 is an interstate and doesn't cross the Park. You would like to go 40 out of Asheville to route 19 to 441 through the park. It is a good road--4 lanes for the most part, as I recall, and a beautiful drive. Don't get faint of heart about going throuth the Park now!! It isn't that long a drive.
I will say that 40 is a scenic mountain drive just outside of Asheville, following the Pigeon River, but actually, now that i think about it, there is a section that is closed due to a rock slide at the moment--or at least limited. SO I think 441 is EXACTLY what you need to do.

Good advice.

Unless you are going on westward, you could actually make a circle -- over on 441, back on I-40. But don't miss 441.

I think they are going on to Nashville, so on the return, just taking I40 to make time would be good. I think they will have to detour up I81 anyway so they will be heading northward also.

I-40 is actually open again.

It's a pretty nice drive on 40 (though it can be stressful, with curvy roads + tractor-trailers), but if you have time to actually go through the park, that would be great.

I think it is only "pretty" for about 50 miles. Good that it is "open" BUT it is only one westbound lane. The traffic will be backed up, for sure!!
So the idea to take 441 through the park going west is still good, because coming back east there are two lanes open--plus they can head up I81 long before that.

Thank you so much for your responses - we will take 441 for sure. Can you tell me approx how many hours it will take to drive from Ashevile thru the Smokys on 441 and up to Knoxville?
Thanks again.

I told you in your Other thread about it. I think it will take about 5 hours. The road is very good, 4 lane, etc.
