Went to Roy's in northwest Las Vegas about a month ago and it was lousy. We were with 5 others and the waiters were very stingy with the bread, only brought 1 slice per person and had to individually keep asking if we wanted more, making us feel guilty if we asked. The food, what there was of it, was dry and bland. Now we are a thin family but even we noticed there was hardly any food on the plates. Not at all filling, the actual meal was like an appetizer. Needless to say we skipped dessert. When we were there about 8 months prior it was great, but I don't think we'll be returning after our last experience.
The Roy's in Honolulu was much better (fresh) about a year ago. |
"Or even simpler. If Donald Trump already owned a Day's Inn, but bought out Wynn's in Las Vegas, would that mean that the new Wynn's is going to operated like a Day's Inn???"
Taking Donald Trump out of the equation, the answer is a decided yes. Any time a corporation with purely numbers based profit, especially where part of the equation is the numbers coming from a perceived bargain, takes over a group with quality or innovation based product, the lowest common denomenator wins out. Whether the outbaack group believes this or not is of no importance. Food cost takes precedence over food quality. Systems supplant innovation. The parent group always has the last word on conflicting visions, and the mind set of those in the Days Inn groups does not encompass the ideation of Steve Winn, or Roy Yamaguchi. This is not a tragedy. The world needs Outbacks. As Roys declines, as it must, another Roy Yamaguchi will fill the void. Things change. The Roy's managers, however, cannot be fired, as they have partially purchased partnerships. |
chefto, the managers can indeed be fired.
The Managing Partner is the one who owns the restaurant with OSI. The Managing Partner is usually under a five year contract and that contract can be terminated at any time by either party. |
Chefotto: "As Roys declines as it must" ; Nothing lasts forever its true but things can last a very long time. We went to Roys in Chi last month. IMHO its still going strong and the quality is still strong as well. Only time will tell. Seems to me you are too fatalistic about this. JM2C.

We dined at Roy's at the JW Marriott Desert Ridge in Phoenix last month and it was excellent in every respect. The service was impeccable, the food was excellent, the wine choices were broad and offered a nice range of prices (the house wines were quite nice and inexpensive). This was one of our better dining experiences and by far the best one we had anywhere in Phoenix/Scottsdale during our visit. Highly recommend the fixed price menu which highlights Roy's specialties.
I would dine with Roy again in a heartbeat (sadly he has not opened in our area - yet) |
The Roy's in Philadelphia is also GREAT!
|
Roy's opened in Woodland Hills, CA (in LAs San Fernando Valley) and it matched his Kahana Grill in Maui for food preparation, service, ambiance. No falloff there.

My husband and I went to the Roy's on the Big Island last March. We thought the food was good and service was good but it really had no atmosphere. However, we went to the Roy's in Chicago over the summer and we loved it. The atmosphere was great (very tropical and pretty), food was excellent and we had some of the best service ever. We are going to Maui next week and considering going to the Roy's in Lahaina. I was wondering how that compares to the one on the Big Island.

I'm wondering how big the portions are at Roy's? Frankly, their print ads have turned me off from going. I'm not going to pay a lot of $$ to get a thimblefull of food drizzled with sauce on an oversized plate, and from their print ads, that's the impression I get. I'm not looking for mountains of food, just a reasonable portion!

We went to Roy's in Poipu (Kauai) last week. It was nice, not fancy, and the food was very good. The atmosphere was lacking though, especially when everywhere else we went in Hawaii has some sort of lovely view.
We took a break from the fish entree routine we were on that week, and ordered four appetizers instead. Everything was delicious. I did, however, see a lot of entree's being delivered to other tables, and they did not appear small to me at all. We concluded our meal with Roy's famous chocalate lava cake, which was ridiculously good. |
My husband and I just went to Roy's in Kahana, Maui, with my sister and brother-in-law. We all gave it thumbs down. The asparagus sauce, which was served over fish, was rated truly aweful by three of us and my husband said it was 'OK', but, he will eat anything. We had eaten at Roy's two years ago and it was separate from the bar, very nice, wonderful food, exquisite atmosphere, a great experience. Now it has been moved in with the bar area. The original restaurant is now a different restauranat. Roy's now is noisy, serves uninspired dishes with truly horrible sauces and mediocre deserts. The service was very good, until we told our waitress we would like a different sauce for the fish.
I feel sorry for the servers who have to deal with customers who get lousy food. It seems Roy must be living on his previous reputation. Too bad. |
Mom and I dined at the Atlanta Roy's two years ago after our first visit to Roy's with my cousin and his wife in Tokyo.I think Roy's sets the bar high at ALL locations!

I guess we have just been very lucky at Roys. We have dined there about a dozen times, various locations, over the years, and each time, lunch, dinner, have had a fabulous dining experience. Our dinner at the San Diego Roys was lovely, the Big Island Roys where we ate twice, was memorable, and Maui, we only had appetizers, was a great time with a large party. The Roys on the Seventeen Mile drive for lunch was awesome, and we have eaten at the Roys in Scottsdale a few times, again, wonderful.
But then again, we love Asian fusion, creative dishes, new mixes, intersting combinations and flavors, we love fresh fish, and good service. Atmosphere? It all seemed fine to us, once we got our first martini... |
Responding to the request about portion sizes - appetizers are fine for the beginning of the meal - sufficient but not huge. Entrees are large. Last time we were at Roy's (on Scottsdale Rd. in Scottsdale), I had the Butterfish, and I took half the portion home for a large lunch the next day. I don't usually like to eat fish the second day, but it was almost as good as it was the first evening.
