Route 70 PA to Kansas

Route 70 PA to Kansas
We are driving to visit family next week - PA to Leavenworth, KA. On the return drive, we hoped to see some places of interest just slightly off the main highway 70. Any suggestions?

If time permits drop down a little from I-70 and drive US-50. If you belong to AAA get their Tour Books to help.

If you do drop down to Route 50, and if you take the old Route 50 between Lebanon and Carlyle, IL (there's a new "test pavement" through that area just north of the old road), stop for a burger at Wally's Drive-In in Breese. It's right on Route 50. Having grown up in Breese, I admit to being biased, but their burgers are the best!
I see you're planning the excursions on the way back. Staying on the old Route 50 through that area would be easier heading west than heading east. I'm sure it can be done. It'd just be a little trickier.

Heading east on 70, just before Columbia is an exit for Rocheport. You could consider getting off there, and stopping at the Les Bourgeouis (I'm sure I spelled that incorrectly) winery/bistro for lunch and a walk down to look over the bluffs above the Missouri River.
Lunch is very good. Wines can be iffy, try before you buy. I've had a lovely Claret there, and one time made a quick stop and bought a case from another year without tasting. Let's just say it was a big mistake.
Rocheport itself is nice, and you can access the Katy Trail there. Maybe you'll want to rent a bike and take a spin!

Further west, in Indiana, you might consider looping up to Parke County and Rockville:

Yep, covered bridges! You don't have to be there during covered bridge festival to visit the bridges. Rockville itself is a nice Midwestern small town where you can hang out onthe square of an evening, and find Broasted Chicken at a drivein. Nearby is Turkey Run State Park (gorgeous) and Billie Creek Village, and an Erie Canal historic tour which might be interesting to you from another perspective than PA.
