Route 66 in August
 

We are going to take the Route 66 in August form Chicago to Las Vegas/NV. Are there any advice for us. We are 5 adults and a teen. Sorry my English isn't perfect.

Ingrid, Are you sure you want to drive all the way? In Arizona it reaches 110o F (42C) during the day and the desert is very dry in the summer...There are alot of points of interest, but they are very spread out...Flagstaff, Williams, Grand Canyon, Oatman (has wild burros roaming the streets)...These are a few in Arizona, Good Luck, Mary

You are aware, Ingrid, that there has been no signs saying "Route 66" on our highways for over fifteen years? If you want to travel what USED to be Route 66, you'll have to get a good guidebook; as some of the roads are almost abandoned. Following this old route is a nice, nostalgic, thing to do; but not particularly easy unless you have a pretty good guide book.

Along the route, places I have enjoyed are:
[1] Springfield (home of President Abraham Lincoln), [2] Saint Louis (Forest Park, Arch), [3] Albuquerque [4] Grand Canyon (MUST-SEE!!!)

In Albuquerque, venture slightly north off Route 66 to Old Town. Eat at the La Hacienda -- affordable, fabulous food. <BR>

Thank you for answering me. Do you think we have to do room-reservations all the way?

If you want to stay at a hotel within Grand Canyon National Park, you should get room reservations as soon as you know your dates; and never less than months in advance. Otherwise, you should be okay if you make reservations about one night ahead (two nights on Fridays, Saturday, and Sunday). I have travelled extensively around the US and have, about 90% of the time, been able to find a good place to stay just by driving until I get tired or reach the site I want to see the next day. This style of travelling has its risks (I admit my stomach gets a little tight near the end of the day when I see a lot of "No Vacancy" signs), but it is MUCH better than having every place reserved for every night (tried that once and ended up driving like a maniac just because I had reservations at a specific site).

Paul, I read in another topic in St. Louis there is the largest mosaic of the world. Can you tell me where the cathedral is. I couldn't find anything about it in my guide.
