route 66

I would like to take a trip along the original Route 66. Does anyone know the exact starting and ending points? Also any especially fascinating points of interest.

This is my daughters dream trip too- we just came home from Grand Canyon and saw signs all along the way pointing to the original Route 66. She says it starts in LA and ends in Chicago. We stopped in a town that was the birthplace of Route 66. E mail us and we will look it up on the map for you. My daughter knows the history of the route etc. Maybe there is a website on this historic route??

For an excellent map, write to R. Waldmire, Old 66 Visitor Center, Box 46, Hackberry, AZ 86411. It is extremely detailed, has a lot of interesting notes, and is inexpensive.

This is a trip I've been waiting to take for many, many years but just wasn't able to. Now Route 66 is just about a year away. I have a 1964 Chrysler that I've been restoring and it should be done sometime this summer. Next spring the Chrysler, my wife and I are going to cross the country on Route 66 from Downtown Chicago, where it begins, to Los Angeles.
We'll begin planning and routing all next winter. We plan to stay as much on the "old highway" as possible, stay at the old "motor hotels" that are still left, eat in the old restaurants and diners that have survived AND visit every tourist trap that can attract our attention! I hope to turn the clock back 30 some odd years for a week or two and just enjoy the old car, the old road and the old feeling of wandering down a great piece of American History.
