Looking for Family Friendly ideas along Route 66!
Our 6 kids will have had their fill of National Parks and we're looking for other creative ideas.

From where to where??

I like the section between Seligman & Kingman in Arizona. At about the half-way point, not far east of Peach Springs, turn north onto Indian Road 18. Drive for 67 miles to arrive at a parking lot called Hualapai Hilltop and the beginning of an 8 mile trail to Supai Village in Havasu Canyon, home of the Havasupai people.

Reservations required as a limited number of visitors are allowed on the reservation at any given time.

We'll be traveling between the Grand Canyon and home (Michigan). The reservation sounds like a great idea!! Thanks :)

What time of year?

Guessing you will be using I 40, there are some things in Albuquerque and Santa Fe that might be of interest:

Zoo/Aquarium/Botanical Gardens in ABQ
Explora Museum
Tram up to Sandia Peak or drive up and stop at Tinkertown Museum
Watch a AAA ball game at Isotopes Park
Petroglyph National Monument
Rattlesnake Museum

We are planning a 2 week trip next summer. Started out including Glacier NP, and is slowly evolving into 2 weeks of craziness. South Dakota to Yellowstone and Grand Teton, Hoover Dam, Grand Canyon. Then home via Route 66. Would love to surprise the kids with a day at a dude ranch to wrap it up as they will be tired of National Parks by then.

Keep in mind it is going to be incredibly hot around Hoover Dam, and Grand Canyon won't be a lot better.

DebitNM's suggestions for Albuquerque are great. Santa Fe doesn't have as much to offer for younger kids.

If I was doing your trip, I would go as early in the summer as possible (like starting on Memorial Day weekend) and go south first. It will still be hot, but not quite as hot as it will be later in the summer.

If you do make it down to the Grand Canyon, you can get a taste of Route 66 in nearby Williams, Arizona. Small western historic town with just enough--but not too much--tourist appeal.

I wish we could go earlier in the summer. School doesn't get out until June 9 in Michigna. Then the schools hold their sports camps the next week. We're going to just have to grin and bear the heat.

I think we're cutting out the ranch idea. Going to concentrate on activities around Jackson and Grand Teton instead.

In that case, I'd definitely go south first and then head up to Yellowstone and Grand Teton. It will be a little cooler along Route 66, and more of Yellowstone will be open later in June.
