Rough Water Near Homer?
Our trip to Kenai Fjords was not a great success last year because of the terribly rough water on the day of our cruise. Does anyone know if the odds are better for calmer waters in Cook Inlet (Rainbow Tours)? How about the trip across Kachemak Bay between Homer and Halibut Cove or Seldovia? Anyone have a favorite kayaking trip? Thanks.

I don't think this can be predicted. When we did the Kenai Fjords trip there was a heat wave plus the ocean was very calm. Our captain took us into this wonderful isolated lagoon that she said was only navigable a few times each summer since the inlet was a very tight fit for the boat. We also took a boat trip (Danny C?) to Seldovia. The ocean was very calm that day, too. This was late June. The heat that year took even some Alaskans by surprise. We attended an open air event and forgot to put on sunblock. Some people were sweating in flannel shirts. We stopped at a thrift shop in Palmer so my husband could buy some short sleeved shirts. Heading to Denali the mountain could be seen clearly. We even have some video my husband took around 1 AM from a cabin in Peter's Creek.

Thanks. I'd like to do some kind of wildlife cruise/tour from Homer while my husband is out fishing.
Have you ever been to Seldovia? This tour looks good to me (if the waves cooperate):
A 6 hour round trip tour to Seldovia. Leaving Homer harbor at 11:00 am we make our way to Gull Island to see the home to nine nesting species of birds. Many, many other species may be found here during migration, before and after nesting. Then on to 60 foot rock, a smaller rookery. Here we find where the sea otters hang out. In early season they have their cute little pups with them. Then on through scenic Eldred Passage and into Seldovia taking about 2 hours. You then have 3 hours to enjoy this beautiful village where you can have lunch, hike the trails or just take photos for you scrap book. Back to the boat for a 4:00 pm departure and a one hour ride with arrival at 5:00 pm in Homer.

Yes, we did an overnight to Seldovia staying at the Boardwalk Hotel and returning to Homer via small plane. The plane ride was the highlight. The sea otters were numerous and fun to watch. The birds aren't as exciting as the boat ride out of Seward. Seldovia is a very small town with a lovely walk along what is remaining of the old boardwalk. We hung around a bridge watching eagles for awhile. We did not take the long hike. Check the time estimate to see if you can do the hike plus eat at the restaurant. I think you might have to bring a picnic lunch if you do the hike. There's a couple of very small shops.
