Rough Rider Hotel,Medora, ND or Bunkhouse

Does anyone have lodging info for these two hotels? Thinking of stopping over in Mendora instead of Dickinson.

We stayed at the AmericInn when we passed through Medora a few years ago and I can recommend it. It is more expensive than the other options, quite expensive actually given its location in western ND, but it was the right choice. I don't recall seeing the Bunkhouse, but the Rough Rider looked like it would live up to its name.

We also stayed in Dickinson at the Comfort Inn there and I can recommend that. We got it on a Priceline rate of around $47, if I remember correctly. Dickinson is a bigger town with much better dining options. The Elks Lodge, a restuarant associated with the Elks but open to the public, is almost next door to the Comfort Inn and is excellent, particularly the steaks. In fact, it is at the top of MileKing's all-time list of best value meals. For about $50 (including tax and tip), Mrs. MileKing and I had filets, salad bar, baked potato, 3-4 glasses of wine, coffee, and desserts. Unbeatable!

I live in ND and have been to Medora many times. AmericInn is nice - your typical chain hotel. The RoughRider Hotel was built back in the days of Teddy Roosevelt. If you want an authentic Old West experience, stay there. But if you want a pool, whirlpool and modern rooms, stay at the AmericInn or Badlands Motel. The Bunkhouse Motel consists of double-wide mobile homes converted to motel rooms. Very basic; very spartan.

Definately see the Medora Musical, have dinner at the pitchfork fondue, and breakfast at the local Cowboy Cafe.

Enjoy ND - we do!

I agree with MileKing. Definitely choose Americinn, its the best in medora. While we like historic hotels (think hotel colorado in glenwood springs....rough rider isn't it) Americinn also includes cont'l bfst, including made to order waffles.

Medora is somewhat like a tombstone, az in it's tourism, but Teddy Roosevelt Nat'l Park is there, and thats definitely worth a look. This park is basically the Badlands Nat'l Park of ND (vs. SD) including the bison.

Thankyou for the excellent information. We are driving from VA to the Canadien Rockies and just received a copy of the ND 2005 travel guide. After reading about the Teddy Roosevelt NP, the pitchfork fondue and the Medora Musical, we became interested in all three.
If I keep my reservation in Dickinson, I would have to drive to Medora and back for dinner and the show, plus lose driving time seeing the park the next morning.

Our best bet is to leave a day earlier and change the dates for the first three reservations on the trip. Having the extra day would also enable us to see the north unit of the TRNP.

Thanks again...ronk

You won't be disappointed by the Medora area. I've been to 37 states, and I think that the whole TRNP area is one of the most underrated in the nation.

Stay in Medora, don't waste the time driving. Dickinson is a fine town with great people, but Medora is where you want to be.
